A Six-Year-Old's Letter to the President: "We Will Give Him a Family"

This summer, the world was shocked by a photo of a young Syrian boy, sitting silently in an ambulance after an air strike on Aleppo, covered in blood and dust. The boy, Omran, became an iconic image of the toll the conflict in Syria is taking on its people and the ongoing refugee crisis it has created.

In a politically caustic environment, it is not surprising that some have reacted with fear and suspicion to the idea of welcoming refugees to our shores. But not Alex. Alex is six years old and lives just outside of New York City with his mom, dad, and little sister Catherine. When Alex saw what had happened to Omran, he sat down at his kitchen table and wrote President Obama a letter. "Can you please go get him and bring him to [my home]," he asked. "We'll be waiting for you guys with flags, flowers, and balloons. We will give him a family and he will be our brother."

In the Leaders Summit on Refugees this week, President Obama shared that letter with the world leaders that had gathered together to discuss what they could do to solve the global refugee crisis.

The humanity that a young child can display, who hasn’t learned to be cynical, or suspicious, or fearful of other people because of where they’re from, or how they look, or how they pray, and who just understands the notion of treating somebody that is like him with compassion, with kindness -- we can all learn from Alex.

The President also shared his story on Facebook.

	Dear President Obama,

Remember the boy who was picked up by the ambulance in Syria? Can you please go get him and bring him to [my home]? Park in the driveway or on the street and we will be waiting for you guys with flags, flowers, and balloons. We will give him a family and he will be our brother. Catherine, my little sister, will be collecting butterflies and fireflies for him. In my school, I have a friend from Syria, Omar, and I will introduce him to Omar. We can all play together. We can invite him to birthday parties and he will teach us another language. We can teach him English too, just like my friend Aoto from Japan.

Please tell him that his brother will be Alex who is a very kind boy, just like him. Since he won't bring toys and doesn't have toys Catherine will share her big blue stripy white bunny. And I will share my bike and I will teach him how to ride it. I will teach him additions and subtractions in math. And he [can] smell Catherine's lip gloss penguin which is green. She doesn't let anyone touch it.

Thank you very much! I can't wait for you to come!

Watch: President Obama Reflects on His Historic Trip to Laos

This week, President Obama became the first U.S. president to visit Laos. During his visit toWat Xieng Thong, a Buddhist temple in Luang Prabang, President Obama reflected on the historic nature of this trip, his approach to countries that have historically been adversarial with the U.S., and what his visit means for the future of our two countries.

	Watch:

On his approach to countries with which we share a difficult history:

“If you look at what we've done in Cuba and Myanmar and Laos and Vietnam, these are countries that were historic enemies and it grows out of the vestiges of the Cold War. But a new generation of people all around the world are ready to turn the chapter, and we have to meet them and work with them."

On why it was important to visit Laos:

"When we are able to come here, show respect for their culture, recognize our history and point towards a future in which we can work together, we will actually have more influence. We'll be able to promote our ideals more effectively. And we'll also learn from these countries."

On what our engagement with countries like Laos means for our future:

"For so long the United States has been so big, so powerful that we felt that we could afford not to know about a country like Laos. But the world has shrunk, it's interconnected -- and if we want to deal with issues from climate change to wildlife trafficking, to dealing with terrorism, we need the cooperation of everybody. That's part of what we've been able to accomplish, I think over the last seven, eight years is open up places that previously were closed and engage people in ways that will pay huge dividends in the future."

This week, the President heralded the achievement of the whole world coming together to combat climate change, traveled to the Pentagon and the National Counterterrorism Center to continue the work on securing our nation, and presided over a very moving naturalization ceremony at the National Archives.

	Saturday, December 12

On Saturday evening, the President delivered a statement from the Cabinet Room on the historic global agreement reached by the U.S. and nearly 200 nations to combat climate change, otherwise known as the Paris Agreement.

	Monday, December 14

The work week kicked off with an official visit to the Pentagon. Alongside the Vice President, the President convened a National Security Council meeting on the counter-ISIL campaign. Afterward, he spoke to the media on the need to intensify our coalition efforts against ISIL to degrade and ultimately destroy that terrorist organization.

	Tuesday, December 15

Tuesday morning was time for a trip to the National Archives — where the President got to do one of his favorite things: attend a naturalization ceremony. New American citizens representing 25 different countries took the oath, and did so within reach of the actual document that makes that ceremony possible, the U.S. Constitution.

Later, the People's House served as a stop for Eden's Make-a-Wish scavenger hunt. Eden is battling brain cancer, and First Dogs Bo and Sunny gave her a special clue to help her fulfill the wish she made — to meet and ride a unicorn.

	Wednesday, December 16

On Wednesday, the President invited three-term Mayor of the Big Apple, Michael Bloomberg, into the Oval Office, where they discussed efforts to curb gun violence in America.

	Thursday, December 17

On Thursday, in advance of the holidays, the President traveled to the National Counterterrorism Center for a threat briefing and to review efforts — across our entire government — to prevent attacks and protect our homeland.

In between a busy schedule of bilateral meetings, the Vice President had a meeting of a different sort — with some cute kids who's parents work at the Embassy in Kiev.

And later, he met with Prime Minister Yatsenyuk.

	Tuesday, December 8

That afternoon, the President invited Israeli President Rivlin to the Oval Office for a bilateral meeting. And later, the two Presidents both attended the annual Hanukkah reception — with a special musical performance by the Maccabeats.

This week, the President traveled to Paris, France, to speak with world leaders and lead a global effort to confront climate change — as well as partner with the private sector to spur innovative, clean energy growth. And when he got back home, it was time to kick off the holiday season, and the White House was all decked out for the occasion. That's November 27th to December 3rd or, "Fromage!"

	Friday, November 27

On Friday, the First Lady, along with Bo and Sunny, welcomed the White House Christmas Tree — a Fraser fir, standing a full 18.5 feet tall in the Blue Room. Meanwhile, hundreds of volunteers prepared the White House for the holiday season.

	Saturday, November 28

On Small Business Saturday, the President and his daughters did some holiday shopping at a local bookstore, Upshur Street Books. And for a quick treat on the way home, they stopped by a local favorite — Pleasant Pops, for popsicles.

On Sunday morning, the President boarded Air Force One en route to Paris, where he would attend a summit of leaders from nearly 200 nations who had gathered to address the threat of climate change. He landed after midnight — and went straight to the Bataclan, the concert venue where the most lives were lost during the terrible Paris terrorist attacks.

	Monday, November 30

On Monday morning, the President and his delegation drove to Le Bourget — where he spent a busy day with world leaders working on a deal to address climate change on a global scale. There, he also held two bilateral meetings. First, with President Xi Jinping of China, and later with Prime Minister Modi of India. He also addressed the Opening Session on the need to confront climate change.

Later, in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium, the President announced Mission Innovation — a public and private sector project to invest in clean energy research and development.

Following in the European tradition, the President attended a late dinner — hosted by President Hollande of France, in Paris' historic Marais neighborhood.

	Tuesday, December 1

Tuesday's agenda was filled with more meetings. First, with President Erdogan of Turkey and his delegation at the U.S. Ambassador's residence in Paris. Then, the President got to meet with Embassy staff and their children.

And later, the US hosted a meeting with leaders of small island nations — countries that are seeing firsthand the effects of climate change, and must already prepare for the consequences.

Then it was lights, camera, action as the President sat down for an interview with French journalist Laura Haim.

The President's final event of the day before flying home was a news conference where he answered questions about the Turkish border with Syria, our campaign to degrade and destroy ISIL, and both the threat and opportunity posed by climate change.

Then it was time for the President and his staff to go home — leaving behind a delegation to continue the work with other nations to finalize the details of the climate deal.

	Thursday, December 3

On Thursday morning, the President delivered a statement about the senseless shooting in San Bernardino, California.

Later, the President participated in one of his favorite quarterly activities — meeting with the season's class of interns — where he gets to put on his mentor hat and answer some questions.

That evening, the First Family kicked off the holiday season with the lighting ceremony for the National Christmas Tree on the White House Ellipse.

This week, the President wrapped up his trip to Asia — a cross-continental journey that took him to Antalya, Manila, and concluded in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He honored Medal of Freedom recipients back at the White House, and pardoned a couple of lucky turkeys before Thanksgiving. That's November 20th to November 26th or, "This Turkey is Hereby Pardoned."

	Saturday, November 21st

The President spoke powerfully about how America is at its best when we give a chance to refugees who have risked everything to live a life free of persecution.

	Sunday, November 22nd

On Sunday, before a day of meetings, the President greeted the staff and families of the U.S. Embassy in Malaysia. Then, world leaders and their delegates filled the halls of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre for the East Asia Summit.

The President concluded his trip with a news conference, where he answered some questions about ISIL.

After a week of whirlwind meetings, the President and his delegation bid adieu to Asia and headed home — crossing multiple time zones and arriving in the wee hours of Monday morning.

	Tuesday, November 24th

On Tuesday, the President welcomed President François Hollande of France to the White House to discuss international efforts to combat ISIL. They joined reporters in the East Room for a news conference.

And that afternoon, the President honored 17 distinguished Americans, who were honored with the highest civilian honor — the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

	Wednesday, November 26th

On Wednesday, the President convened a meeting with his National Security Team to discuss efforts to protect the homeland over the holidays.

That afternoon, the President welcomed some impressive student entrepreneurs in the Oval Office.

And later, the President continued the tradition of pardoning a turkey — freeing "Honest" and "Abe" from a Thanksgiving dinner table.

Following the turkey pardon, the First Family volunteered at Friendship Place, their own "service before supper" tradition.

On Friday, the President expressed our solidarity with the French people, after terrorists attacked their capital city.

	Sunday, November 15th

The dialogue on our efforts to combat ISIL continued through the weekend, when the President crossed the Atlantic on his way to Turkey, the first stop on his 10 day trip to Asia.

One 10-hour flight later, the President arrived at the ripe hour of 6:56 AM, where he began a full day of meetings with world leaders. First he met with the host country’s President Erdoğan. Then, he took a family photo with the G-20 leaders, and later held a bilateral meeting with King Salman of Saudi Arabia.

	Monday, November 16th

On Monday, the President continued his whirlwind of meetings. He kicked it off with a meet and greet with local embassy staff, and then onto the G-20 summit.

In the afternoon he met with four European leaders from the UK, Germany, Italy, and France. And later, the President held a news conference where he answered questions about the terror attacks in Paris, and how the United States and the 65 members of the coalition we lead will further intensify our efforts to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL.

	Tuesday, November 17th

On Tuesday, the President flew another 11 hours to reach the Philippines.

Then the President held a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Australia.

	Wednesday, November 18th

Wednesday kicked off another meeting and press conference — this time with the host country’s President Aquino. Later, the President spoke with enthusiastic business leaders in the Asia Pacific that are dedicated to making an impact and the global challenge to combat climate change.

That afternoon, the President and other APEC leaders took a family photo before a meeting about the Trans-Pacific Partnership — a new trade agreement that will level the playing field for American workers and American businesses.

The President capped off a busy day with a group photo before sitting down to dinner and a cultural performance.

	Thursday, November 19th

On his final day in Manila, the President headed into his last round of meetings with APEC world leaders to discuss regional integration and the global economy.

He followed that up with two one-on-one meetings. The first with Canada’s new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and then Prime Minister Shinzō Abe of Japan.
