Rating
What This Rating Means |
PERFORMING Moderately Effective
In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
- The program's external advisory committee is underutilized. This raises serious questions about the program's interest in receiving outside expert advice.
- The program supports a supercomputer user facility and targeted research programs in applied math, computer science, and computational application software. Many of the program's efforts have been historically regarded as world class and of high quality.
- The program's performance measures focus on the extent to which unique, large simulations are efficiently enabled by its software development activities and supercomputer user facilities. The first assessment of how the program is doing against its long-term goals will be completed by the end of 2006.

Improvement Plan
About Improvement Plans |
We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:
- Engaging advisory panel and other outside groups in regular, thorough scientific assessments of the quality, relevance, and performance of its research portfolio and computing/network facilities.
- Engage advisory panel in an assessment of the the strategic priorities for the program, focusing on the balance between "core" research and supercomputing hardware investments.
- Implementing action plans for improving program management in response to past expert reviews.
