Drug Enforcement Administration

The Drug Enforcement Administration is the principal agency responsible for enforcing the Nation's drug laws. This includes preventing, deterring, and investigating the illegal growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances in, or destined for, the United States.

This rating describes a program that needs to set more ambitious goals, achieve better results, improve accountability or strengthen its management practices.
  • The Drug Enforcement Administration is unable to demonstrate its impact on the availability of drugs in the US but has shown sustained progress in disrupting and dismantling high priority drug trafficking organizations. The program consistently exceeds its performance targets for disrupting and dismantling these priority trafficking groups.
  • It has made significant progress in strategic planning and performance measurement. The program developed new goals, measures and a strategic plan to help determine its success in reducing the availability of drugs in the U.S.
  • The program lacks a high quality independent evaluation of the program's impact on reducing drug availability. Existing evaluations are not rigorous or comprehensive enough, and the program has not yet commissioned a new evaluation.

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Planning an independent evaluation of the program's drug enforcement activities and its impact on the domestic drug market.
  • Improving the program's methodology for projecting long term performance. This will result in more accurate targets that will challenge the program to continue improving its performance over time.
