NASA Aeronautics Technology
NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate conducts foundational research across aeronautics disciplines, including research that supports the Next Generation Air Transportation System. ARMD also pursues a coordinated approach to managing aeronautics test facilities.

What This Rating Means |
PERFORMING Effective
This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
- The program has a clear purpose, and is well designed. The program focuses on research that is appropriate for government, consistent with the National Aeronautics R&D Policy.
- The program has a comprehensive set of ambitious but realistic performance measures. Individual projects have performance measures that support long-term goals, such as support for the Next Generation Air Transportation System.
- The program has not yet received independent evaluations of sufficient scope and quality. Such evaluations are underway.

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:
- Conduct an annual review by experts outside the program &/or from other government agencies to assess the program's quality of research and alignment with national priorities.
- Complete the assessment of NASA's fundamental aeronautics research by the National Research Council of the National Academies: "Evaluation of NASA's Fundamental Aeronautics Research Program.
- Benchmark practices in performance and budget integration and performance measurement to similar practices from other government agencies.
