Grants for Nutrition and Health
This program provides grants to support research and extension programs to improve the nutritional well being of the population. The largest recipients of grants are land grant universities and State agricultural experiment stations. Grants are provided through open competition, formula, or earmarks.

What This Rating Means |
PERFORMING Effective
This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
- This program responds to a serious problem, the negative impact that poor dietary habits are having on the health and well-being of Americans.
- The program uses expert peer review scores to measure the performance, quality and relevance of programs. It also measures the development and use of effective intervention strategies to change behavior, and tracks the achievement of participants in the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP).
- While this program does include a number projects added to the Budget by the Congress, the number is fewer than in other research programs. However, within the limitations of total funding, the inclusion of any unrequested projects reduces funding that could be used for high priority national programs.

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:
- Ensuring that all interested parties have the necessary access to grant information, as well as continuing to emphasize grant capacity building as appropriate.
- Improving the focus of grant recipient reporting on outcomes.
- Increasing planning and coordination with the Agricultural Research Service regarding the collection of stakeholder input.
