Physical Education Program

The purpose of the program is to help students in grades kindergarten through 12 make progress toward meeting State standards for physical education. The program awards grants to local educational agencies and community-based organizations for equipment and support and for training and education for teachers and staff.

Rating

What This Rating Means

NOT PERFORMING
Results Not Demonstrated

A rating of Results Not Demonstrated (RND) indicates that a program has not been able to develop acceptable performance goals or collect data to determine whether it is performing.
  • The program is the only Federal grant program that addressess the issue of youth physical fitness and is targeted on school districts that have the most difficulty meeting State standards for physical education.
  • Grantees, beginning with the 2006 cohort, are collecting and reporting standardized data under performance measures that are comparable across sites and can be aggregated meaningfully to assess the overall effectiveness of the program.
  • Some grantees are conducting evaluations of their local programs, but to date there has been no independent national evaluation of the program to determine whether it is effective and achieving results.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Providing technical assistance to grantees to promote reporting consistent data for program performance measures.
  • Conducting a national evaluation to identify needed improvements to, and assess the effectiveness of, the program.
  • Working with Congress to eliminate this separate, categorical program for physical education.
