Bureau of Justice Statistics

The Bureau of Justice Statistics collects, analyzes, and publishes statistical information on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operations of the justice system. The program provides data needed by researchers and policymakers to understand and influence the workings of the criminal justice system.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • The program is well-managed, overall, and largely achieves its goals of providing information for policymakers and the public. In 2005, more than 400,000 users per month, on average, downloaded data from or visited the Bureau of Justice Statistics' web site.
  • The Bureau compares well with other Federal statistical agencies in survey response rates. The Bureau is the fourth leading site that users of FEDSTATS.gov click through to when visiting that web site.
  • Budget requests should provide more information about how the resources requested will help the program meet its goals. A comprehensive program review would help demonstrate the program's impact.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Including performance information in budget submissions.
  • Planning a comprehensive review of the Bureau to demonstrate the impact of its programs.
