Transit Research

The program supports research studies not typically undertaken in the private sector on policy issues, models, and travel behavior, as well as long-term, high risk investigations of emerging transit technologies.

PERFORMING
Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • The program achieved all of its annual performance goals and is on track to meet all of its long-term performance measures. Most notably, average percent change in transit ridership (in the 150 largest transit agencies) in 2005 was plus 1.4%, a 100% increase over the prior year percent change, and the equivalent of 126 million new transit riders nationwide.
  • The program demonstrated improved effectiveness in research project oversight with 92% of all research projects in 2005 on time and on budget. This performance level represents a 5% increase over the prior year and exceeds the program performance target by 2%.
  • The most recent evaluation reports that program managers are well positioned to encourage stakeholders to work with the Federal Transit Administration on research aimed at common needs and commends the program for improving transparency in its evaluation system for research project selection.

  • Integrating long-term performance goals with the budget process to increase the transparency of resource needs.
  • Completing a program evaluation of sufficient scope and quality from a source with a greater degree of independence than the Transit Analysis Research Committee.
