Peace Corps: International Volunteerism

The Peace Corps sends volunteers overseas to help countries meet their needs for trained men and women to serve in education, health, agriculture, and business; promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served; and promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of all Americans.

Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • The Peace Corps exceeded its goal of having 7,920 Volunteers in the field by September 30, 2007. The program had a total of 8,079 Volunteers on board at the close of FY 2007, serving 74 countries through 68 posts. This level of achievement represents a high for field serving Volunteers for the agency during the last 37 years.
  • Peace Corps has exceeded its goals of skills transfer and cross-cultural understanding. Ninety-five percent of Volunteers report they have helped host country nationals gain a better understanding of the United States and its people, and 86 percent report being adequately to exceptionally effective in transferring knowledge and skills to members of their host community.
  • The Peace Corps has increased its reach into classrooms across America through the Coverdell World Wise School website that contains lesson plans, Volunteer stories, and other educational resources for use in the classroom and beyond. The number of web visits reached 2.1 million in FY 2007 exceeding the FY 2007 target of 1.3 million.

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Identifying new strategic objectives with outcome-oriented targets and indicators more closely aligned to Peace Corps' mission statement which will measure how well Peace Corps is meeting its mission.
  • Creating baselines to measure results including survey data in countries with Peace Corps presence to measure the promotion of a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
