Rating
What This Rating Means |
PERFORMING Effective
This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
- Since its creation by the Education Sciences Reform Act of 2002, IES has transformed the quality and rigor of education research within the Department of Education and increased the demand for scientifically based evidence of effectiveness in the education field as a whole.
- The program has developed ambitious long-term performance goals for the number of effective interventions supported by IES and the number of researchers trained and employed and established baselines and annual targets to measure progress toward these goals. Data from the annual measures indicate that IES has met or exceeded its performance targets and is on track to meet its long-term goals.
- IES has met its performance targets while improving its grant management operations, significantly expanding the number of research projects it supports, and reducing the number of staff needed to award and monitor research grants and contracts.

Improvement Plan
About Improvement Plans |
We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:
- Implementing the recommendations of the National Board for Education Sciences' forthcoming evaluation of the IES research programs.
- Working with other ED offices to increase IES involvement in developing technical assistance materials and guidance on the use of effective research to improve program outcomes in critical areas.
- Producing budget requests that specify how IES will use the funds to support the achievement of each of its long-term goals for the Research, Development, and Dissemination program.
