Bureau of Indian Affairs - Indian Land Consolidation

The program purchases small ownership interests in Indian land allotments. There are 3 million interests in over 10 million acres of Indian lands that were transferred to individuals in the 1800s. The program is intended to prevent further division of the interests among individual owners.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • Over the past several years, the program has purchased and consolidated over 380,000 individual interests.
  • Of the total interests acquired, 87% were interests of less than 2% ownership in the respective tracts of land.
  • The interests acquired are equivalent to nearly 550,000 acres of land for the Tribes.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Developing a strategic plan to guide program expansion to other tribal reservations.
  • Evaluating whether or not the purchase of interests leads to more economic development on the lands and the reduction of Federal administrative costs.
  • Coordinating efforts with tribal land acquisition entities to leverage program dollars.
