National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration: Protected Areas

The purpose of this program is to conserve and enhance the ecological integrity and cultural legacy of marine protected areas. This is done through the direct management of 14 marine sanctuaries and efforts to work across Federal, State, and local entities to enhance planning and management of marine protected areas.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Adequate

This rating describes a program that needs to set more ambitious goals, achieve better results, improve accountability or strengthen its management practices.
  • The program uses the best available science and public involvement to protect both significant natural and cultural marine resources.
  • The program has begun collecting long-term monitoring data within the sanctuaries to allow the program to better evaluate changes in ecological environmental conditions and assess progress in achieving positive results toward meeting its mandates.
  • The program has a clear purpose and is well managed, but could cooperate better with other coastal and marine area management programs to achieve their common goals.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Ensuring that performance targets and timeframes are ambitious.
  • Establishing review processes at the appropriate level and frequency to evaluate effectiveness and relevance of coastal and ocean area management programs.
  • Enhancing integration of Federal, state, and tribal area-based management programs.
