Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • The US Attorneys (USAs) program is effectively designed to achieve the program's purpose. Despite increases in the number of cases and the changing nature and complexity of the cases, the USAs has received favorable resolutions in over 90% of criminal cases and over 80% of civil cases.
  • The program collaborates effectively with its partners. Successful initiatives link prosecutors, law enforcement, and community leaders to provide a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach to deterring and punishing crime. For example, the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative coordinated by the US Attorneys brings together federal, state, and local law enforcement to reduce gun crime.
  • The program must pursue additional improvements in order to meet the established efficiency targets. The program should improve its efficiency and cost effectiveness through workforce re-structuring, leveraging technology, and by implementing cost-saving best practices.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Assessing the allocation of new and existing resources, both within and between USAOs, to balance the caseloads for attorneys across the country.
  • Addressing all concerns relating to internal controls for the Legal Information Online Network Systems (LIONS) for case tracking and reporting.
  • Creating effeciencies by reviewing common administrative functions in the USAOs, such as budget, accounting, procurement, space allocation, and human resources.
