Army Depot Maintenance

The purpose of the program is to maintain Army weapon systems and equipment ready for combat by fully reconditioning or overhauling them. Depot maintenance of existing equipment is critical to ensure that the Army has an adequate number of ground combat systems to protect the nation's interests.

Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • The assessment shows that the Army Depot Maintenance program meets its goals of providing reliable and capable equipment necessary to maintain combat-ready units. For the past three years, the number of critical systems repaired and returned to service has exceeded the planned number by at least 16%.
  • The Army specifically targets funding to address its highest priority maintenance requirements first, and the performance measure for this program is tied to unit readiness.
  • The Army has consistently met its annual and long-term goals. Also, the program continues its effort to improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the program by adapting practices from the private sector (Lean Six Sigma). However, it needs to improve its ability to quantify those improvements.

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Continuing to implement best practices from private industry to improve its efficiency and quality control.
  • Enhancing partnerships with the private sector that result in greater private sector investment in facilities and equipment and improve facility utilization.
  • Quantifying efficiency improvements to provide better data from which to evaluate, and potentially improve, the program.
