Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • The program is the only dedicated provider of expert Hansen's disease treatment, education, and research in the U.S.
  • The program is on track to meet its long-term goals. In 2003, the number of Hansen's disease patients with mild and severe levels of disability/deformity slightly decreased. In 2006, it developed the first reagent needed to fully develop an armadillo model designed to advance the scientific knowledge related to the early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of Hansen's disease.
  • The program lacks an independent evaluation. There are no comprehensive independent evaluations performed of the Hansen's Disease program that provide information on the overall effectiveness of the program.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Implementing viable recommendations of a recent Research Advisory Panel of national and international experts regarding the NHDP's research activities as a component of independent program evaluation.
  • Expanding efforts to train private sector physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of Hansen's Disease
  • Exploring the feasibility and scope of an independent evaluation.
