Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • The program collaborates effectively with other Federal, state and tribal organizations, such as the Fedeal Emergency Management Administration, for the safe operation of dams nation-wide.
  • The program lacks authority to evaluate purposes of existing dams to determine if they continue to serve their original intent or to allow for their deconstruction if they are no long needed to meet contemporary needs. Acquiring this authority will allow the Bureau to better prioritize their budgetary resouces.
  • The program developed additional measurements of performance and set targets to better measure effectiveness of the program. In addition, the added measures will allow this program to be compaired with other Federal dam safety programs.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Using the data collected on the newly established performance measures to begin evaluating program effectiveness and to make management changes where necessary.
  • Working with Tribes and Congress to obtain authority to deconstruct dams if they no longer meet contemporary needs.
