This program supports trust responsibility to federally recognized Tribes and Alaska Natives to protect water and water rights; agriculture and range management; fish, wildlife and parks; and forest management.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Adequate

This rating describes a program that needs to set more ambitious goals, achieve better results, improve accountability or strengthen its management practices.
  • Although there are several Bureaus and Departments providing resources to this group of beneficiaries for similar purposes, the BIA does not duplicate their efforts. This is the only program providing support to the Department of Justice to defend or secure title to Indian water rights.
  • The program has a limited number of long-term and short-term performance measures, developed in 2005, that can adequately demonstrate the performance of the program with the resources provided.
  • Outside interests and Tribes have conducted reviews on specific aspects of the program. However, there has not been an independent review of the program's management on a regular basis.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Conducting an independent review of the program's management.
  • Collecting performance data to evaluate the program based on performance results and take corrective action as necessary.
