Department of Justice General Legal Activities

The Department of Justice's General Legal Activities program is responsible for litigation on behalf of the Federal government. This includes both prosecuting violations of Federal law and defending Federal laws and programs from legal challenges.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • The General Legal Activities program effectively achieves its goal of resolving cases in favor of the government. Favorable resolutions, in turn, punish and deter violations of the law; ensure the integrity of federal laws and programs; and prevent the government from losing money through unfavorable settlements or judgments.
  • The program collaborates effectively with its partners, notably the US Attorneys Offices. The two programs work closely to share expertise, make referrals, and designate cases for prosecution, while minimizing any overlap of responsibilities.
  • The program exhibits good management practices. This includes strong financial management, collecting and using performance information to make decisions, and holding managers accountable for program performance.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Seeking regular, independent evaluations of the program's effectiveness at resolving cases in favor of the government.
  • Establishing a leadership training and mentoring program to continue improving the quality of the program's management.
  • Working with the Department's Chief Information Officer to evaluate and purchase litigation software that will improve productivity and efficiency.
