Science and Engineering Centers Programs

Centers exploit opportunities in which the complexity of the research problem requires advantages of scope, scale, duration, equipment, facilities, and students. They are the chief means by which NSF fosters interdisciplinary research. NSF funded centers focus on Materials, Engineering, and Nanoscale Science among others.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • This program is effective in supporting unique research centers. Independent assessments find that the program enables large scale efforts involving teams of researchers and students working across science and engineering disciplines and sectors.
  • The program helps create partnerships between academic institutions and other sectors. Over half of the program partners are non-academic, which helps strengthen the ties across sectors involved in science and technology.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Monitoring performance against recently established efficiency targets and making appropriate management or other adjustments to improve its performance.
  • Ensuring that the annual performance data on non-academic partners will be collected in a more timely fashion to enable publication of results in Fall Updates.
