District of Columbia Courts

The District of Columbia Courts protect rights and liberties, uphold and interpret the law, and resolve disputes peacefully, fairly and effectively in the Nation's Capital.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Adequate

This rating describes a program that needs to set more ambitious goals, achieve better results, improve accountability or strengthen its management practices.
  • While the Courts have a robust strategic planning process, more work is needed on providing specific and ambitious goals and time frames.
  • The Courts have an established evaluation process, which includes both process and outcome evaluations that are conducted on multiple levels of the D.C. Courts to improve operations, better deploy resources, and assess the effectiveness of the Courts' administration of justice. For example, the Courts have recently conducted an evaluation on the Family Court, Abuse and Neglect Branch.
  • While the Courts' independent financial audits have been free of material weaknesses in recent years, the audits are not timely, as audit results take over one year to post.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Developing ambitious targets and time frames for the Courts' performance measures.
  • Determining a process for ensuring timely financial audits.
