National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research

The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research supports research, demonstration projects and training to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Most work is done through grants to higher education institutions and nonprofit agencies.

  • The program has established long-term goals, including using expert panels to conduct peer reviews of grant applications for quality and collecting information on research activities published in journals.
  • The program is working with other disability research agencies to fund a new Institute of Medicine evaluation of program effectiveness, which updates the last evaluation in 1991.
  • The program does not currently collect and make available to the public its annual performance data on individual grantees.

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Linking future funding requests to the demonstration of results.
  • Reviewing and revising NIDRR's current annual peer review panel process to improve the quality, reliability, and utility of the data produced by these expert panel reviews.
  • Reviewing and revising the research portfolio to focus on a more strategic set of priority areas that will help achieve its goals.
