CDC: Environmental Health

The program promotes a healthy environment and prevents death and avoidable illness and disability caused by environmental factors through public health and scientific information and programs. Activities include asthma control, childhood lead poisoning prevention, and tracking human exposures to chemicals.

Adequate

This rating describes a program that needs to set more ambitious goals, achieve better results, improve accountability or strengthen its management practices.
  • The program addresses the specific need to reduce and mitigate human exposure to a variety of toxic substances and hazardous environmental conditions. There were an estimated 434,000 children with elevated blood lead levels in 1999-2000. Twenty million Americans had asthma in 2001 and 12 million had an attack in the previous year. Many of these were children.
  • The program is working to revise targets and/or long-term performance measures to more accurately account for data variability and/or availability from key data collection systems. New estimates were issued from two of the data collection systems on which one target was based. Another measure is being revised to utilize data that are more consistently available.
  • The program has had independent evaluations. The Government Accountability Office has reviewed the majority of environmental health programs, and the findings helped the program better focus its public health efforts. The program's Board of Scientific Counselors is scheduled to review all of the National Center for Environmental Health's activities over a five-year period (FY 2004 - 2009).
