The Intramural Research Program conducts high-risk, high-impact laboratory, clinical, and population-based research. It also trains future researchers to conduct peer-reviewed research, including research on rare diseases.

  • The Intramural Research Program has demonstrated progress towards its goal. For example, in its goal to establish the role of genetic factors in three major diseases for which health disparities are noted between populations, nearly 6 million genotypes have been collected for the study.
  • The program relies on a system of regular outside scientific reviews, and the funding scientists receive is adjusted based on the findings. The system of research reviews is subject to constant refinement and improvement. A system of management controls assures the responsible use of resources.
  • The program's budget and performance integration is making progress in presenting the tie between funding requests and expected performance results.

  • Beginning biologic assessment of the most likely diabetes/obesity susceptibility genes in regions of linkage/association.
  • Demonstrating that encapsulated cells can be tracked non-invasively by X-ray computed tomography.
