Radiation and Exposure Screening and Education Program

The Radiation and Exposure Screening and Education Program (RESEP) helps individuals exposed to uranium or nuclear testing identify and receive compensation for illnesses that may have resulted from these activities. RESEP provides grants to programs that provide medical screening and health education.

What This Rating Means

NOT PERFORMING
Ineffective

Programs receiving this rating are not using your tax dollars effectively. Ineffective programs have been unable to achieve results due to a lack of clarity regarding the program's purpose or goals, poor management, or some other significant weakness.
  • The program does not impose specific and uniform guidelines for all its grantees regarding the screening of individuals for diseases related to uranium and nuclear testing. The program does direct its grantees to use screening standards that reflect the current state of scientific knowledge, it does not require the use of specific screening guidelines.
  • There is no evidence that the program reaches the maximum number of beneficiaries or the beneficiaries who are at the greatest risk. There is no estimate on the number of people potentially affected by uranium and nuclear testing activities and where they might live.
  • The program currently does not collaborate effectively with related programs. The program has not traditionally coordinated with the Department of Justice to gather data on program outcomes.

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Conducting National Outreach Campaign that will include partnering with other Federal agencies to spread the word about RESEP.
  • Partnering with the Department of Justice to collect data in support of newly developed long-term performance measures.
