US Geological Survey - Biological Information Management and Delivery
The program provides researchers, resource managers, decision-makers, educators, and the public with access to relevant knowledge to support the understanding and stewardship of our Nation's biological resources. The program achieves this by making natural resource data and information easier to access and integrate.

Rating
What This Rating Means |
PERFORMING Moderately Effective
In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
- BIMD has met past performance goals and developed new measures which are outcome oriented, and more clearly focused on improving access to information which is essential for conservation decision makers. For example, a measure was established to track development of conservation status maps that are needed to manage biological resources.
- The program has improved coordination across all program activities through development of a draft BIMD strategic plan. However, there needs to be more formal coordination with the Biological Research and Monitoring program.
- BIMD program reviews have not been adequate. While the program uses various methods for reviews, they have been by research area rather than biology-wide, and were not regularly implemented, or sufficiently independent.

Improvement Plan
About Improvement Plans |
We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:
- Develop a plan with Biological Research and Monitoring to maximize access to research and data and provide timely reports on the status and trends of the nation's biological resources.
- Develop performance measures with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to improve coordination for conservation of fish and wildlife populations of management concern.
- Implement comprehensive and independent programmatic reviews for all of Biological research, monitoring, and management activities.
