Land Protection and Restoration Research
The purpose of the Land Research Program is to provide timely, cutting edge, problem-driven research products to support sound science decisions by EPA offices engaged in activities to preserve land quality and remediate contaminated
sites for beneficial reuse.

What This Rating Means |
PERFORMING Adequate
This rating describes a program that needs to set more ambitious goals, achieve better results, improve accountability or strengthen its management practices.
- The program has long-term and annual output performance measures that reflect the purpose of the program; but ambitious, long-term outcome measures are still under development. The program has a preliminary output efficiency measure.
- The program has a strong strategic planning and evaluation approach that includes extensive input from clients, a process for prioritizing research activities, and regular, independent reviews of program progress and scientific direction.
- The program tracks the progress of its research activities and has regular reporting of financial status. There is less emphasis on prospective financial planning or the use of this information to manage the program.

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:
- Finalizing ambitious, long-term outcome performance measures which assess the utility of the program's research products and services with respect to the outcome goals of its clients.
- Developing and implementing a protocol for more frequent review and use of financial and performance tracking data to improve budget-performance integration.
- Developing a new efficiency measure that captures the cost effectiveness of research activities.
