EPA Radiation Protection Program

EPA's Radiation Protection Program manages a national environmental radiation monitoring program, responds to incidents involving nuclear or radiological material, oversees the safe disposal of radioactive waste, and provides standards for protecting human health and the environment from radioactive material.

Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • EPA's Radiation Protection Program addresses the specific need for radiation monitoring and emergency response in the event of an incident involving nuclear or radiological material. During the 1986 Chernobyl accident, for example, EPA monitored changes in US radiation levels.
  • The program has expanded the portion of the US population covered by the monitoring program (from 28 percent in 2005 to 32 percent in 2006), and improved its ability to perform the emergency response roles required by the National Response Plan's Nuclear/Radiological Incident Annex and the National Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan.
