President Obama Speaks to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Convention

Yesterday, President Obama traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to speak at the 116th Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) convention.

The President addressed a crowd of thousands of veterans to discuss veterans’ health care, the performance of the VA, civilian and military relations, and American foreign policy and leadership abroad.

	[[nid:344141]]

“VFW, our nation endures because citizens like you put on the uniform and serve to keep us free,” the President said, praising the dedication and service of American veterans. “We endure because your families serve and stay strong on the home front. We endure because the freedoms and values you protected are now defended by a new generation.”

	[[nid:344151]]

President Obama went on to discuss his view of American foreign leadership: “Instead of rushing into another conflict, I believe that sending our sons and daughters into harm’s way must always be a last resort, and that before we put their lives on the line, we should exhaust every alternative. That’s what we owe our troops.”

And he also talked about what we owe our veterans when they come home. “Real strength is measured by how we take care of our veterans,” he said, which is why the Obama administration has worked to reduce wait times at the VA and to make VA benefits available to more than 2 million veterans who didn’t have them before.

During his remarks, the President also took a few moments to honor the five service members killed in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

"We are grateful to the courageous police who stopped the rampage and saved lives. And we draw strength from yet another American community that has come together with an unmistakable message to those who would try to do us harm: We will not give in to fear. You cannot divide Americans."

President Obama Celebrates 25 Years of the ADA

Yesterday, President Obama celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) at the White House.

In the East Room, President Obama honored those who made the ADA the law of the land – the activists, congressional representatives, and stakeholders who worked tirelessly to ensure that millions of Americans with disabilities had the chance to make their contributions to the world.

"Thanks to the ADA, the places that comprise our shared American life -- schools, workplaces, movie theaters, courthouses, buses, baseball stadiums, national parks -- they truly belong to everyone."

— President Obama

(Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)

President Obama outlined the commitments that the government has made to be more responsive to people with disabilities since the passage of the ADA — and reiterated his own commitment to continuing the legacy set in place by President George H.W. Bush when the ADA was signed in 1990.

The Obama administration created the first office within FEMA dedicated to disabilities - so that if and when a disaster strikes we are prepared to help everyone – and created the first special advisor for international disabilities at the State Department. The Administration has also worked to make sure that federal contractors have plans in place for hiring people with disabilities, and has encouraged all others to do the same.

The President lauded the contributions of the ADA, and highlighted that more people with disabilities are in the workforce today than at any point in the last 30 years because of this legislation. He also explained how the ADA was personal to him - his father-in-law, Fraser Robinson, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in his early 30s, before the passage of the ADA, and could have benefited from its provisions.

“And just through the power of his example, he opened a lot of people’s eyes, including mine, to some of the obstacles that folks with disabilities faced and how important it is that the rest of us do our part to remove those obstacles,” the President said.

The Oldest Living Veteran Meets the President

This afternoon, President Obama invited 110-year-old Emma Didlake -- believed to be the country's oldest living veteran -- to the Oval Office. "It's a great honor to have her here." the President said.

(Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)

Emma Didlake was a 38-year-old wife and mother when she decided she wanted to join the military. In 1943, she signed up for the Women’s Auxiliary Corp (WAC) and served as an Army private and driver for almost a year during World War II.

Her decorations from her time in the service include the Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.

After she was discharged, she moved with her family to Detroit where she joined the local NAACP chapter, eventually marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Detroit in 1963. A trailblazer for women and African Americans, Didlake received a lifetime achievement award from the chapter two years ago.

Born in Boligee, Alabama in March of 1905, Didlake credits a number of things in keeping her active and healthy at age 110, including eating fruit and vegetables, and avoiding meat. She also loves to read and meet people to keep her mind active.

In this week's address, the President called the Supreme Court’s decision on the Affordable Care Act a victory for hardworking Americans across the country, whose lives are more secure because of this law. The Affordable Care Act is working, and it is here to stay. So far more than 16 million uninsured Americans have gained coverage. Nearly one in three Americans who was uninsured a few years ago is insured today. The uninsured rate in America is the lowest since we began to keep such records. With this case behind us, the President reaffirmed his commitment to getting more people covered and making health care in America even better and more affordable.

President Obama Hosts a Ramadan Iftar Dinner at the White House

Yesterday evening, President Obama hosted an Iftar dinner celebrating the Muslim holy month of Ramadan at the White House.

President Barack Obama hosts an Iftar dinner celebrating Ramadan in the East Room of the White House, June 22, 2015. (Official White House Photo by Lawrence Jackson)

The Iftar is the evening meal after sunset that concludes the daily fasting during the month of Ramadan. Observers around the world gather with families, loved ones, and communities to break their fast together. For observers, the Iftar dinner and Ramadan are a time to reflect on humanity and to reaffirm commitments to helping the less fortunate. This year, Ramadan, which follows the lunar calendar, is taking place during the longest days of the year.

Last night's celebration was President Obama's seventh Iftar dinner at the White House. This year, in addition to inviting members of the diplomatic corps, White House staff, and elected officials, there was a special focus on young leaders and women helping communities across the nation.

Speaking at the dinner, President Obama said that the annual Iftar was a reminder that "whatever our faith, we're all one family."

"Our Iftar is also a reminder of the freedoms that bind us together as Americans, including the freedom of religion -- that inviolable right to practice our faiths freely."

— President Obama

President Obama recognized several young Muslim Americans who were making an impact here in the U.S. and around the world. He applauded Samantha Elauf, who was determined to defend her right to wear a hijab on the job. She took her case all the way to the Supreme Court and won. He cheered Zaid Ahmed, a 16-year-old who founded Redefy, a website that pushes back against harmful stereotypes. He recognized 27 year old Wai Wai Nu, a former political prisoner who is working on human rights issues for the Rohingya and equal rights for women.

The President also spoke of the inherent freedoms in America that bind us together -- including freedom of religion. He reflected on the way Americans of all faiths rallied around the community in Chapel Hill when three young Muslims were murdered earlier this year, and said that all of these stories remind us that our obligation to care for one another extends beyond our immediate communities and borders. The President reminded us that the challenges we face daily as a people demand the same qualities that observers summon every day during Ramadan -- sacrifice, discipline, and patience.

“… we don’t simply endure, but we overcome. Together, we can overcome ignorance and prejudice. Together, we will overcome conflict and injustice -- not just with words, but with deeds. With what a hero of mine, the civil rights icon John Lewis, calls using our feet -- getting out in the real world to organize and to create the change that we seek. That’s what so many of you do every single day. And that’s what we have to continue to do together, here in America and around the world. As the Quran teaches, let us answer with 'Peace.'"

President Obama ended his remarks wishing Muslim Americans and Muslims around the world a blessed Ramadan.

"To all of you, and to Muslim Americans across the country -- Ramadan Kareem."

During the ceremony, President Obama pointed out that the San Francisco Giants were more than just a winning franchise on the field — they're working to help lift up their community off the field as well.

The President announced that the baseball team is partnering with San Francisco State University and Major League Baseball to build a multimillion-dollar youth training academy called the Urban Youth Academy. The academy, complete with training facilities, batting cages, and two baseball fields, will also help young sports enthusiasts with classwork, with a division that will offer mentoring, tutoring, and college prep.

President Obama also praised their “Junior Giants” program, which works to get young people active, teaches them skills like self-esteem and teamwork and leadership, and helps provide scholarships to underprivileged youth.

Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants on a great season.

The White House Hosts a Forum on Combating Antibiotic Resistance

Today, the White House hosted a forum on combating drug-resistant bacteria and enhancing good antibiotic stewardship. The gathering today was an effort to engage in a discussion on the dangers of the overuse of antibiotics, and follows the March release of the National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria.

At the forum, the White House announced a Presidential Memorandum directing the federal government to buy meat from sources that follow responsible antibiotic use. Separately, it was announced that here at the White House, the Presidential Food Service will only serve meats and poultry that have been raised in accordance with the same responsible-use policies.

Orgs pledging to improve #antibiotic use @WhiteHouse forum today is just a start.

The White House also highlighted several companies' leadership in committing to curb antibiotic use in food production and agriculture.

See what some of these companies are doing to tackle the growing problem of antibiotic resistance:

Tyson Foods, Inc.

Tyson Foods, Inc., the world’s second-largest marketer of chicken, beef, and pork, has committed to eliminating the use of human antibiotics from its U.S. broiler chicken flocks by September 2017. Tyson Foods also committed to working with their farmers on ways to reduce antibiotics in supply chains for independent cattle, hog, and turkey farms.

Donnie Smith, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Tyson Foods, said they came to the White House today to highlight the importance of using antibiotics responsibly. “We believe this is the most responsible approach to balancing global health concerns about antibiotic resistance, animal well-being, and food affordability,” he said.

Panera Bread Co.

Panera Bread has expanded on a long history of providing proteins without antibiotics by expanding their antibiotic-free protein selections to now include roasted turkey, smoked chicken, breakfast sausage, ham, and bacon.

Sara Burnett, the Senior Quality Assurance Manager at Panera, who was representing Panera Bread today at the White House, said that Panera had answered the President’s call to try to eliminate antibiotics in the food supply chain because Panera wanted to help show others that it could be done successfully for multiple species.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

Walmart, one of the world’s largest consumers, has committed to asking its own suppliers to limit antimicrobial treatment to animals that are either ill or at risk, as well as requesting that they implement the American Veterinary Medical Association’s standards for the judicious use of antibiotics.

Frank Yiannas, the Vice President for Food Safety and Health at Walmart, said that Walmart had committed to following President Obama on this issue because it was “the right thing to do.”

President Obama Hosts a Question-and-Answer Session with Young Southeast Asian Leaders

Today, as part of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative, President Obama hosted a meeting with 75 emerging leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the White House. The Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative encourages civic and government leaders from Southeast Asia to enhance their leadership skills and work with their American counterparts to help promote economic empowerment, good governance, and environmental and natural resources management in their home countries.

The 75 leaders who came to the White House today were made up of a group of 55 YSEALI Professional Fellows and 20 YSEALI Academic Fellows representing all 10 ASEAN countries.

While here at the White House, these young leaders met with policymakers and participated in a question-and-answer discussion with the President on themes of civic engagement, natural resources management, and entrepreneurship.

Here are three takeaways from their conversation:

The President told the young leaders that one of the most important things that he stood for was making sure that he was treating everyone fairly — no matter their sex, race, religion, or sexual orientation. The President emphasized that as long as you had a clear view of what you stood for, you could always look yourself in the mirror and know who you were and why you were doing what you were doing.

During the question-and-answer session, President Obama also said the reason that he thought the Trans-Pacific Partnership was so important was because it really fit into his greater ideas of equality and fairness for all. At its core, the trade deal, President Obama said, “set up a set of principles to ensure fair trade between countries.”

Finally, the President noted how sustainability is key to a future that isn't decimated by climate change and environmental destruction. That's why he's fighting to ensure that our economic development is tied to sustainable development.

This afternoon, First Lady Michelle Obama addressed the Class of 2015 at Oberlin College in Ohio.

(Official White House Photo by Amanda Lucidon)

The First Lady addressed the graduating Oberlin College class because Oberlin College was selected as part of the First Lady’s Reach Higher initiative’s “Near-Peer Mentoring College” Challenge – a challenge to institutes of higher education urging them to share videos on the ways they are helping high school students take charge of their future.

Oberlin’s near-peer challenge video showcased student voices from their Ninde Scholars Program, which matches Oberlin undergrads who provide academic support and college-access services to high school students in Ohio public schools. Oberlin's efforts exemplify the First Lady's mission to encourage schools to promote "near peer" mentorship. You can watch Oberlin College’s submission video here.

Not only was Oberlin the winner of her challenge, and a shining example of how to get underserved young people go on to college, but it held historical significance for Mrs. Obama as well.

"Oberlin is likely the only college in America that I could have attended nearly two centuries ago, and I am honored to be part of the extraordinary legacy of this great institution."

— First Lady Michelle Obama

Oberlin College was the first college in America to adopt a policy to admit African American students, as well as the first co-ed school to grant bachelor’s degrees to women -- and this year marked the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s own commencement address at Oberlin College.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Oberlin President Robert Carr in the Commencement processional. Mrs. Carr and Mrs. Coretta Scott King look on. (by the Oberlin College Archives)

The First Lady urged today's graduates of Oberlin to channel Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the spirit he aroused 50 years ago, to tackle the problems of today:

"You see, in his speech to those Oberlin graduates 50 years ago, Dr. King urged them, as Julia said, not to sleep through the civil rights revolution that was raging across this country. And, graduates, climate change, economic inequality, human rights, criminal justice -– these are the revolutions of your time."

— First Lady Michelle Obama

The First Lady also urged the graduates to “rise above the noise and shape the revolutions of your time.” For, she said, “That is how you will have a meaningful journey on those clamorous highways of life.”

"Class of 2015, I’m here as your Commander-in-Chief, on behalf of the American people, to say thanks to each of you."

— President Obama

The President thanked the Coast Guardsmen cadets for embarking on a life of dedication to service, achievement, and purpose. He told them how much America needs them: in times of disaster or distress, in dangerous places around the world, and on the frontlines of our homeland.

President Obama also said that he viewed their biggest challenge as their mission to help protect against the peril of climate change.

"And this brings me to the challenge I want to focus on today -- one where our Coast Guardsmen are already on the front lines, and that, perhaps more than any other, will shape your entire careers -- and that’s the urgent need to combat and adapt to climate change."

"I am overcome with gratitude that you have had the courage to make these preventative health services available to all women."

— Alison S.

Alison S., a young woman from Arlington, Virginia, wrote to the President: “Today, for the first time at age 32, I picked up my prescription for oral contraception and was charged a grand total of $0.00.”

Because of the Affordable Care Act, there are birth control options available to women, with no co-pay or cost-sharing. Even with a private health care plan she has through her plan, the ACA is helping her by improving the benefits she receives.

Alison wanted to let President Obama know that she was grateful: “It is reassuring to know that our nation’s leader is advocating for such progressive measures in our modern society.”

President Obama Honors Fallen Peace Officers

Yesterday morning, President Obama attended the National Peace Officers Memorial Service where he honored 131 peace officers who died in the line of duty this year and met with the families of the fallen law enforcement members. The National Peace Officers Memorial Service, held annually at the U.S. Capitol, is part of National Police Week and pays tribute to the men and women – beat cops, deputies, detectives, correctional and forest service officers, federal agents, and tribal police - who have put themselves in harm’s way so that others could live in safety.

At the memorial service, President Obama thanked the families for allowing their fallen loved ones to serve, and told them how deeply grateful we are for their loved one’s sacrifice.

President Obama praised the courage and idealism of the fallen peace officers, noting that it took a truly special individual to make the commitment to risk their lives so that others could know peace and security.

"We hold them up as heroes because that’s what they are. It takes a special kind of courage to be a peace officer."

— President Obama

The President promised that, in tribute to the officers who were killed in the line of duty, “we can work harder as a nation to heal the rifts that still exist in some places between law enforcement and the people you risk your lives to protect.”

He also told attendees how thankful he was for the sacrifice borne by the families of the fallen officers who serve right alongside their loved ones. The President promised that as a country we would work harder to honor their legacy, because we “owe it to your fellow officers who gave the last full measure of devotion.”

"It is because of ‘Obama Care’ and the revisions to prenatal coverage that we are able to both afford medical coverage for our family and grow our family."

— Siobhan F.

Siobhan is a wife and mother from McKinney, Texas. When she was laid off last year, she lost health care benefits -- and because her husband’s company didn’t offer coverage, her family was left without any access to health care.

She ultimately found another job, but the premiums were still too expensive.

But, with the passage of the Affordable Care Act, all of that changed. Now, under the ACA, Siobhan not only can find coverage at an affordable rate, but knew she had quality maternity and prenatal coverage when she found out she was expecting a baby. As Siobhan said, access to affordable health care is “a blessing that no family should be denied.”

This afternoon at the Global Entrepreneurship meeting, President Obama welcomed emerging entrepreneurs from across the country and around the world to the White House to honor their achievements in their fields of business.

He also announced new commitments in support of the Spark Global Entrepreneurship Initiative -- a bold goal of generating $1 billion in new investment for emerging entrepreneurs worldwide by 2017, and issued a call to action to companies, organizations, and individuals across the globe to increase their support to emerging entrepreneurs, before his trip to Kenya in July for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit.

"Encouraging the spirit of entrepreneurship can help us to tackle some of the greatest challenges that we face around the world."

— President Obama

No matter where he traveled around the world, the President noted the one thing that united folks everywhere was their desire to know how to start a business and share their own destiny.

Now, more of America’s business leaders and innovators are joining the White House in an effort to promote entrepreneurship. The Presidential Ambassadors for Global Entrepreneurship (PAGE) initiative is comprised of a group of successful American businesspeople eager to share their knowledge and experience to help develop the next generation of entrepreneurs. The PAGE initiative grew out of a promise that President Obama made at the 4th annual global entrepreneurship summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2013. PAGE initiative members have all agreed to engage with policy makers globally, acting as ambassadors in discussions about how to create environments where innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship can thrive.

President Obama and Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker announced today that nine new members have joined the Presidential Ambassadors for Global Entrepreneurship (PAGE) initiative:

Brian Chesky, co-founder and CEO, Airbnb

Antonio Gracias, CEO and Chief Investment Officer, Valor Equity Partners

Brian Chesky, co-founder and CEO of Airbnb, a website that allows individuals to rent out their own lodging, is an example of entrepreneurship as a catalyst for change. Since the Obama administration has opened the doors for businesses to invest in Cuba, Airbnb has decided to expand there now that the Cuban economy is opening up to greater Internet connectivity and modern payment systems. Now, Airbnb is part of the progress that will ultimately provide enormous economic opportunities for the Cuban people to navigate new business, learn new skills, and increase their Internet literacy.

Today’s meeting at the White House was a precursor to the President’s trip to Nairobi, Kenya this summer for the sixth annual Global Entrepreneurship Summit. The United States has played a key role in organizing all five previous Global Entrepreneurship Summits, including the inaugural summit in 2010, designed to encourage innovators to choose entrepreneurship as a profession and to empower aspiring entrepreneurs, giving them access to mentors, networks, and capital.

This afternoon, President Obama hosted the Air Force Fighting Falcons football team at the White House in honor of their winning the annual Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy.

In the East Room, President Obama congratulated the Air Force Chief of Staff, General Mark Welsh; the Superintendent of the Air Force Academy, Lieutenant General Michelle Johnson; Coach Troy Calhoun; and the Fighting Falcons of the Air Force Academy on a great football season. The Falcons went 10-3 this past year, including a bowl victory.

President Obama also made sure to congratulate the Falcons for more than just their victorious season, pointing out everything they were doing off the field. He praised the cadets for their leadership, and their commitment to combating sexual assault on their campus. He also noted that the Air Force Falcons had the highest graduation rate in the conference, and that Coach Calhoun recruited players with at least a 3.5 high school GPA. He also commended the cadets for volunteering their time and giving back to their communities — and, of course, their country.

Today, President Obama welcomed the 2015 Super Bowl Champions, the New England Patriots, to the South Lawn of the White House to celebrate their 2015 NFL championship.

The event this afternoon honored the NFL champions as part of the President’s broader push to recognize athletes and sports stars for their contributions to their communities and their leadership on and off the field.

On the South Lawn, the President congratulated the Patriots for being one of the teams committed to leading the way, commending the players for volunteering in the community and visiting schools and hospitals through the NFL’s Play 60 initiative. President Obama also congratulated the Patriots Marathon Team for running in the Boston Marathon, where they raised more than $230,000 for charity, helping to show that Boston is still stronger than ever.

The President even joked with the Pats that he wished they'd “share some of those titles you keep winning with Chicago.” After all, he's hoping to see his Chicago Bears at the White House before he leaves office.

The New England Patriots finished 12-4, winning their sixth AFC East title, and ultimately Super Bowl XLIX in Phoenix. During the championship game, the Pats beat the Seattle Seahawks 28-24, and quarterback Tom Brady was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
Historic Photos: A Look Back at Presidential and Cabinet Trips to the Everglades

Today, in honor of Earth Day, President Obama is traveling to the Everglades – the tropical wetlands in the southern part of Florida.

Since 1970, we've commemorated Earth Day on April 22 each year, with worldwide celebrations in support of environmental protection. President Obama is visiting the Everglades this year to highlight how climate change is already damaging American treasures like our National Parks, as well as how climate change will affect our economy, our personal health, and our national security. The Everglades, one of the most beautiful and environmentally sensitive regions in the country, is a key source of drinking water for a third of Florida’s residents, and significantly boosts Florida’s revenue and economy through tourism at the park.

Read more here about the steps President Obama and his Administration are taking to fight climate change, and protect our national treasures like the Everglades.

President Obama isn't the first President or Cabinet member to visit the Everglades, though. Check out a few photos of other Presidential and Cabinet trips to the Everglades over the years:

President Obama Honors the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion

Watch on YouTube

This afternoon, President Obama welcomed 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Kevin Harvick and the Stewart-Haas Racing Team on the White House South Lawn. The event continued the President’s tradition of honoring athletes and teams for their efforts to give back to their communities.

During the event, President Obama also commended Kevin Harvick and his wife, DeLana, for their work on the Kevin Harvick Foundation, which aims to help underprivileged youth excel as students. “Kevin — like so many others across NASCAR — is working to make a difference,” President Obama said.

"It is always wonderful to have the NASCAR family here. We've got huge fans in the White House."

— President Obama

Today, President Obama honored both Kevin Harvick; Kevin’s crew chief, Rodney Childers; and all of “Four Car” for their phenomenal season. Kevin Harvick drives the No. 4 Chevrolet for Stewart-Haas Racing in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series. The President was thrilled to have Kevin’s whole team — including their shiny red car — here, too.

The President compared Kevin’s team’s chemistry to that of himself and his own Vice President:

"As the season started, Kevin had a new team, a new crew chief to adjust to. It usually takes a little time for a driver and a crew chief to find their groove, but Kevin and Rodney seemed to figure out each other in a hurry -- sort of like when Joe Biden joined my team."

— President Obama on the phenomenal first season for Kevin Harvick and Rodney Childers

Kevin Harvick’s team used speed and a lot of smart pit strategy to win the 2014 championship. Throughout the season, Kevin won at Phoenix, Darlington, Charlotte, and then Phoenix for a second time. Kevin topped off the season by winning the Ford EcoBoost 400 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway, winning both that race and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship. Even more impressively, Kevin was only the second driver to win the championship by winning the season-ending race at Homestead.

A Hero's Journey: The Eighth-Annual Soldier Ride

Today, President Obama, Vice President Biden, and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Bob McDonald welcomed members of all five U.S. military branches to the White House for the eighth-annual Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride. The President, Vice President, and Secretary McDonald led the cheers as participants rode around the South Lawn- the first stop in their three-day, 60-mile long cycling tour.

"We are among heroes here today."

— President Obama on the Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride

The Soldier Ride helps improve wounded warriors' physical and emotional well-being, and raises awareness about the physical and psychological damages that our soldiers and veterans face as a result of war. The Soldier Ride uses cycling and the idea of service to help our soldiers overcome the wounds of war as they return to a new lifestyle. It is a community ride, intended to show wounded warriors that if they put their minds to it, they can overcome anything.

But, it represents more than that. As the President said this morning, the Soldier Ride shows our soldiers and veterans that they are not alone. Even through long recoveries and long adjustments, the Soldier Ride showcases how inspired our communities feel by our warriors, and it binds us together with them, under our American flag.

That’s why the Soldier Ride’s lap around the lawn at the White House means so much to the President, and is one of President Obama’s favorite traditions. For the sixth year in a row, the President kicked off the Soldier Ride, welcoming the soldiers and veterans to the White House and blaring the horn to start the race – which he called his “favorite part” of the event. As soon as the President finished speaking, soldier riders on bikes and in wheelchairs took off across the driveway and did a lap around the lawn.

"You and all the men and women of our Armed Forces represent what’s best in America. And for me and Michelle and the girls, for Joe Biden and Jill, and I know Bob and his family, time with you has been some of the most inspiring parts of our jobs."

Our Endangered Climate: Kicking off Public Health Week

Watch on YouTube

Yesterday, President Obama issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring this week, April 6-12, 2015, as National Public Health Week.

As part of the effort to support public health with a sense of purpose and determination, the Obama administration has focused on how climate change affects our environment. Our public health is deeply tied to the health of our environment. As the planet warms, we face new threats to our health and well-being, and the President is taking steps to counteract those threats.

Today, President Obama spoke at Howard University Medical School in Washington, D.C., joined by the Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murphy, and Gina McCarthy, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, at a roundtable. The President explained what the Administration has already done to reduce the dangerous levels of carbon dioxide that are contributing to climate change, and discussed ways to prepare our communities for the impacts that cannot be avoided.

(Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)

In keeping with the President’s directive to make government as open as possible, as well as his commitment to combating climate change, the Administration also announced this morning that it's expanding its Climate Data Initiative to include more than 150 health-relevant datasets on climate.data.gov.

Why does this matter? Last year, President Obama unveiled the Climate Data Initiative as a way for Americans to find data related to climate change that can help inform and prepare businesses and citizens for the impacts of extreme weather -- essentially, as a way to boost their own resilience against the impacts of climate change.

These newly released datasets, in addition to the more than 500 others already available, will better inform scientists and communities about how to minimize the health impacts of climate change. These additional datasets will also help individuals understand how the changing climate affects public health in their area, risk factors that make a person more vulnerable to climate-related health effects, and how to plan for uncertain future conditions. Ultimately, new commitments to advance the Climate Data Initiative help empower people and communities with science-based information and tools to prepare for climate change.

See more ways that the Obama administration is taking action to protect communities from the impact of climate change here.

This afternoon, President Obama traveled to Birmingham, Alabama to highlight new actions the Administration is taking to protect you, the American consumer.

While in Birmingham, the President hosted a roundtable on the economy and delivered remarks at Lawson State Community College. He advocated for stricter payday lending rules and taked about the progress we’ve made building a safer and stronger financial system.

President Obama praised the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), an independent watchdog that is taking new steps towards cracking down on abusive practices involving payday loans. Now, lenders will be required to verify that borrowers can pay them back, and limit short-term credits to 45 days.

President Obama made it clear that his long term objective, and the reason for his visit to Alabama, is take actions that prevent predatory practices from ripping off working families.

"If you’re making that profit by trapping hardworking Americans into a vicious cycle of debt, you’ve got to find a new business model."

	— President Obama

President Obama said working families need protections from the heavy debt burdens that the financial industry can impose on Americans, and made sure to note that he would veto attempts to block his plans to ensure the financial industry is working for you.

Even beyond today, the Obama Administration has always made protecting consumers a priority. Aside from the work of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Obama Administration has taken several steps to help families and the middle class get ahead, including:

Cracking down on conflicts of interest in retirement investment advice costing middle class families billions every year

Putting in place a bill of rights for students that are taking out loans to pay for college

Providing proactive mortgage payment relief for active duty service members and their families

What You Missed: The White House Student Film Festival

This weekend, President Obama hosted the second annual White House Student Film Festival. Check out who kicked off the show!

A few months ago, we asked students across the country to create short films about the Impact of Giving Back, and to show us what service meant to them. We received more than 1,500 submissions this year, and this past Friday and Saturday, we screened our 15 Official Selections at the White House.

We saw films that showcased a real drive to give back. We saw students go into their communities and make changes to help others. We saw young filmmakers show how one person really can make a difference, big or small. We even saw one superhero who used his super powers for good.

And "kid president" wasn't the only person to lend his star-power to the event. Hilary Swank, Steve McQueen, Jake Johnson, Terrence J, LaLa Anthony, Kal Penn, Amber Riley, Michael Ealy, and Will Packer all joined us at the White House to support the President’s Call to Arts initiative, and to emphasize the importance of giving back to your community at the White House Student Film Fest.

Even though the film fest is over, the fun isn't. At the film fest, the President committed himself to making a difference too! On Friday, he announced the creation of the new Call to Arts initiative, a program in partnership with the American Film Institute and the Screen Actors Guild-America Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) to encourage mentorship.

The American Film Institute (AFI), the Screen Actors Guild-America Federation of Television, and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) both answered the call, and are teaming up to pledge 1 million educational and mentoring program hours for young people across the country over the next three years.
