Obama Administration Officials to Visit Bay Area to Discuss National Ocean Policy

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Nancy Sutley, Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and Dr. Jane Lubchenco, Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, will speak at the Commonwealth Club of California on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, about President Obama’s newly created National Ocean Policy.

On July, 19, 2010, President Obama signed an Executive Order establishing our Nation’s first comprehensive, integrated National Policy for the Stewardship of the Ocean, our Coasts, and Great Lakes.  The Executive Order also created a National Ocean Council to strengthen ocean governance and coordination, established guiding principles for ocean management, and adopted a flexible framework for effective coastal and marine spatial planning to address conservation, economic activity, user conflict and sustainable use of the ocean, our coasts and the Great Lakes.

Chair Sutley and Dr. Lubchenco were among a group of Administration Officials who held an Ocean Policy Task Force Public Meeting in San Francisco, California roughly one year ago, on September 17, 2009.
