Celebrating National Mentoring Month

Summary:
Joshua DuBois describes celebrating mentoring with President and First Lady at the White House.

Yesterday, the President and First Lady brought together mentors and mentees from across the country to celebrate National Mentoring Month.  Young people and their mentors from more than 30 organizations came to the White House to participate in a conversation about the importance of volunteers being involved in the life of a young child, and the President also announced a new White House mentoring program for young men, a complement to the First Lady’s program for young women.  The White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships was honored to organize this event.

The President also recognized partnerships among nonprofit organizations and the business community that are supporting mentoring efforts.  For example,  MENTOR Inc. and the Viacom Corporation  have partnered to allow Viacom employees flex time to mentor.

I’m a mentor myself - my “Little Brother” Aidid is a wonderful 11th grader in Boston, MA; we met through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay when he was just 7 years old, and have been great friends ever since. So I can attest to the President’s strong statements about the power of mentoring – both for mentees, but also for mentors as well.
