As the days get cooler and kids are back in school, it’s a great time for community health events. Last month, I was able to participate in just such an event sponsored by Mary’s Center in Washington, DC. The folks at Mary’s Center hosted a Back to School Health Fair to connect community members to healthy living tools and resources. Mary’s Center focuses on maternal and children’s health issues. For over 20 years they have provided medical, educational, and social services free of charge to those in need.
The HHS Partnership Center participated in the Back to School Fair along with representatives from USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Text4Baby, and other partners. Over 250 parents and children also received free dental screenings, medical exams, and vaccinations, as well as school supplies.
Local chefs gave cooking demonstrations and tips for nutritious lunch box options, and kids enjoyed face painting. Everyone left with a smile on their face and great tools for good health
