Past and Present: Celebrating July 4th at the White House

Summary:
Presidents have held Fourth of July celebrations at the White House for over 200 years. In honor of July 4th, 2015, the President and First Lady will commemorate the occasion with the company of military families, rejoicing in freedom and love for our country.

"It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more."

—John Adams, 1776

On July 4, 1776, Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, and the Liberty Bell rang a sound of freedom at Independence Hall. Since that day, affectionately known as America's birthday, the White House has celebrated liberty and justice for all each summer. President Thomas Jefferson held the first Fourth of July event at the People's House in 1801, and 20th century presidents have continued the tradition.
