Lloyd Whitman

Assistant Director for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy

Lloyd Whitman is the Assistant Director for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), on detail from his position as Chief Scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). At OSTP, Lloyd supports the National Nanotechnology Initiative and the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI), helps the Administration maintain strong support for those initiatives within the Federal agencies and among key external stakeholders, and serves as a liaison to international nanotechnology and advanced materials programs and initiatives. He also advises on other science and technology policy initiatives within OSTP, including water S&T and advanced manufacturing.

Lloyd received a B.S. in Physics from Brown University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Cornell University. He spent most of his research career at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, where he led a diverse portfolio of research studying semiconductor, organic, and biomolecular nanostructures, their use in novel functional surfaces, and their integration into advanced sensor systems.  He was subsequently the founding Deputy Director of NIST’s Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology. Lloyd has over 160 publications and multiple patents in the areas of nanoscience, materials science, biotechnology, and sensor technology, and has been recognized with numerous media citations and awards.
