Village Bank Program in Malawi Dr. Richard J. Kemme of Greeley, Colorado uses his background in orthopedic surgery to train orthopedic surgeons in the southeast African nation of Malawi. Dr. Kemme helped develop Orthopedics Overseas, a branch of Health Volunteers Overseas that sends health care volunteers to developing countries to educate local health care workers and to treat patients. Orthopedics Overseas today provides 90 percent of Malawi’s orthopedic care. He also launched a Rotary-supported micro-loan program that now serves nearly 22,600 Malawians. He is also the developer and owner of three apartment complexes that provide affordable housing for 270 senior citizens of limited income. Dr. Kemme’s work has earned him the President's Call to Service Award, Rotary Service Above Self Award and the Rotary Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award. Richard Kemme is being honored as a Champion of Change for his humanitarianism and contributions to public service, aimed at improving people's lives and making a better future around the globe.
