Chef Timothy Cipriano is the Executive Director of Food Services for New Haven Public Schools. In March, Chef Tim was one of ten chefs handpicked by the White House to meet with Sam Kass, White House Assistant Chef and Food Initiative Coordinator and the USDA at the White House to coordinate a program for chefs to adopt schools, part of the First Lady’s Let’s Move Campaign.

In an effort to combat obesity in this country President Obama invited two school nutrition chefs to the Childhood Obesity Summit at the White House in April, 2010. Chef Tim was one of the chefs invited.

Chef Tim, as he is commonly referred to, began this position with NHPS in July 2008 and immediately started building collaborative partnerships around school food with local organizations such as Yale University, CT Food Bank, CitySeed Farmer’s Markets and Lockwood Farm in nearby Hamden, Connecticut. One of Tim’s most valuable achievements to date has been introducing more fresh, local produce into the school lunch program and working to educate New Haven’s urban students about fresh, healthy and great tasting food choices. Chef Tim has over 16 years of culinary experience.

About Chefs & Let's Move!

Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams.

One of Let’s Move! initiatives is The Chefs Move to Schools program, which helps chefs partner with interested schools in their communities so together they can create healthy meals that meet the schools’ dietary guidelines and budgets, while teaching young people about nutrition and making balanced and healthy choices.

Chefs can have a tremendous impact on the health and well-being of children by adopting a school and working with teachers, parents, school nutrition professionals and administrators to help educate kids about food and nutrition. By creating healthy dishes that are also delicious, chefs have a unique ability to make good nutrition fun and appealing.
