Dr. Sandy Shugart
President, Valencia Community College
Dr. Sanford C. “Sandy” Shugart has served as fourth president of Valencia College in greater Orlando since January, 2000. For more than a decade, he has led the college in a process of deep change designed to put student learning first and achieve quantum improvements in completion. As a Vanguard Learning College, an Achieving the Dream leader college, and a Gates/DEI grantee, Valencia has pioneered systemic changes in student engagement, pedagogy, curriculum and assessment, and articulation – changes that have resulted in dramatic improvements in student learning and graduation and the closing of gaps between students of different backgrounds. On September 13th, Valencia College was selected as one of ten finalists for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. Prior to Valencia, Shugart served as president of North Harris College and Vice President of the North Carolina Community College System.
