Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What if I can’t afford insurance – will I be penalized?

You will have access to new insurance choices in the same insurance marketplace where all members of Congress will buy their insurance, receive tax credits to help you afford coverage if needed, and get protections from insurance company abuses like denying you coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

Q: What if I can’t afford insurance – will I be penalized?

A: The President’s plan will make insurance affordable by providing tax credits to help reduce the cost of health insurance.

  • The truth is that American families who buy insurance from work pay a hidden tax of $1000 to subsidize the cost of caring for the uninsured.  They pay twice.  Once for their family and again for the uninsured.  With reform, this hidden tax will begin to be cut for all Americans.
  • But if a person still can’t afford to buy insurance, they’ll be eligible for a waiver if the premiums they would have to pay exceed 8 percent of their income or if they don’t have to file an income tax return.
  • For the very few Americans who can afford to purchase insurance, but refuse to do so, they’ll have to pay a fee.
