Map of Administration Community-based Initiatives: About the Data

WHAT IS THIS MAP?

This map is an experimental view of the Obama Administration’s work in local communities. It is made up of data sets from initiatives across more than 15 Federal agencies. We are adding datasets and features to the map as we build it, so check back for updates. The map was built using open source tools and data, and we welcome your feedback at https://github.com/ObamaWhiteHouse/omb_place.

WHY DID WE BUILD IT?

We built this map to have a more interactive view of our community based initiatives around the country. We thought it might also be useful for local community leaders, academics, philanthropists, and private citizens. So we decided to make it public.

WHAT CAN I SEE ON THIS MAP?

Most of the data on the map is from Federal place-based initiatives around the country. We’ve also added summary layers, which allow you to hover over a state or county to see how many initiatives are in that location. This map also includes background statistical and demographic information, such as US Census data on counties of persistent poverty, and data from a recent Harvard University study about upward economic mobility by county.

HOW DO I USE IT?

To start, click on the square “Layers” button in the top right corner, and select or de-select the layers you would like to see appear overlaid on the map. You can also type the name of a city or county into the search bar at the top of the map, and it will take you directly there. Click on the area you are interested in to see a pop-up of the initiatives within that geographic area. Click on the print button at the top to see a printable report of the area within your current view.

PLACE BASED INITIATIVES

For each of the below initiatives, data has been provided directly by the Federal agency responsible for the initiative. Please see the websites linked for more information about the initiatives and the work being done in these communities, or visit the corresponding links to download the data in either TopoJSON or GeoJSON format.
