  • FINRA Foundation Expands its Financial Education Offerings for Military Families

The FINRA Investor Education Foundation announced today that it is expanding its Military Financial Education Project. The FINRA Investor Education Foundation provides investors with information and tools to better understand the markets and the basic principles of saving and investing. In 2006, the Foundation launched a multifaceted program to expand the saving and investing knowledge of military service members and their spouses, including a free, unbiased resource, SaveAndInvest.org/Military.

The FINRA Foundation will provide free FICO® Scores, a vital credit tool, along with a suite of educational videos that will help troops manage their finances. The Foundation aims to reduce the numbers of service members that are exploited by investment fraud and to increase its efforts to educate military spouses to become financial counselors. The project includes educational forums on military installations and online resources to help service members make informed decisions when they manage their money.

  • Is there a Hero in Your Neighborhood?

Watch First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden announce the Joining Forces Community Challenge, here.

The First Lady and I are excited to announce that the submission deadline for the Joining Forces Community Challenge has been extended to October 31, 2011.

In a previous post, we highlighted a sample of the submissions and nominations that we have already received.  Since that post, we have been amazed by the flood of applications featuring people around the country that are working to support our military families. Whether as an individual, a small regional organization, or a nation-wide effort, you continue to be an inspiration to us all.

  • First Lady Michelle Obama Meets with Military Spouses

Last week, First Lady Michelle Obama was in Cranston, Rhode Island to meet with military spouses at the Rhode Island Army National Guard Facility.

The First Lady and Dr. Jill Biden have been traveling across the country to talk about how neighbors, communities, and the nation as whole can support our military families as part of the Joining Forces initiative. They have seen extraordinary examples of individuals, businesses and non-profit organizations stepping up to support our Nation’s military families.

One way to support the families of our troops is to hear stories about their experiences directly from military families themselves. The roundtable conversation in Rhode Island was another opportunity for the First Lady to listen to military spouses and let them know about some of the work that is being done to give them the support they deserve such as the President's challenge to the private sector to hire or train unemployed veterans and their spouses by the end of 2013.

  • Entire Town Joins Forces for Military Families and Veterans

During the 9/11 weekend, the town of Independence, Kansas dedicated a memorial displaying the names of residents from Independence that are currently deployed overseas in Iraq or Afghanistan.

In a wonderful example of our nation’s gratitude to our military families, residents, local businesses, local and state officials joined together to dedicate the display during the weekend of service and remembrance. The event organizer, Kathy Shepard, working with local leaders such as Mayor Derrill Unruh saw this as an opportunity to involve the wider community and surrounding area in service. Working together, they have set out to collect over 25,000 volunteer hours in support of Operation Honor Card.

As the cards are collected, they will be posted on the display wall as a sign of the community’s continuing commitment to their military families, decorating the names of those deployed with the pledges of support from the town. The kind-hearted dedication to service members and their families shown by Kathy and the people of Independence is truly inspiring.

This week, Wounded Warrior Project™ (WWP),and the American Red Cross announced that they are joining forces in a new multi-year partnership that will allow both organizations to strengthen services and support offered to our nation’s wounded and their caregivers. On Tuesday, both organizations met at the National Headquarters of the American Red Cross to kick off the partnership and to assemble 500 Transitional Care Packs.

“Alone each organization makes a difference within the military community, but together we magnify our impact to those men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country” said Sherri Brown, SVP, Service to the Armed Forces, American Red Cross.

WWP and the Red Cross are collaborating on Wounded Warrior Project’s longstanding Transitional Care Pack program. The packs contain clothing, toiletries, and other essential care and comfort items newly injured warriors are often without. The pack provides immediate comfort when a warrior is evacuated from the battlefield to a field hospital. Traditionally sent to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, the new partnership with the Red Cross will expand the scope of delivery to Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany; Camp Arifjan, Kuwait; Djibouti, Afghanistan and other military medical facilities that are providing medical treatment and supporting wounded warriors.

“The American Red Cross has long believed as we do that it is important to support wounded veterans and their families in all facets of their recovery. With a shared mission to support these heroes, a collaborative partnership made sense on so many levels. We are honored to be working with a group that has done so much good for so many.” said Wounded Warrior Project Executive Director Steve Nardizzi.

This new collaboration is a perfect example of organizations stepping up and working together to support our Nation’s wounded service members and their families as highlighted by the Joining Forces initiative launched by the First Lady and Dr. Biden. Their partnership ensures the continuation and enhancement of other existing WWP and Red Cross programs, which provide unique and innovative support to wounded warriors during the rehabilitation process.

Wellness and resiliency are also a critical piece of the new partnership. The organizations will work to develop and manage several adaptive sporting programs and therapies including but not limited to warrior games and wheelchair sports. Both WWP and the Red Cross share the belief that it is critical to support staff and military personnel who are instrumental in the survival and recovery of the wounded. The two groups will plan and organize respite days for spouses and family members who are providing care for a wounded service member or veteran.

In joining forces, both organizations will together serve those who have sacrificed so much.
