Statement from Director Kerlikowske on the Second Chance Reauthorization Act

Washington, D.C. – Gil Kerlikowske, Director of National Drug Control Policy, released the following statement regarding the Second Chance Reauthorization Act:

"The Obama Administration is committed to reducing drug use and its consequences through evidence-based policies and practices that promote the health and safety of all Americans. The Second Chance Act is an important part of a balanced approach to drug control that provides access to vital substance abuse treatment and recovery support services, promotes stable families and safe communities, and helps break the vicious cycle of drug use and crime. I want to thank Chairman Leahy and Senator Portman for their work in support of the Second Chance Act. By providing substance abuse treatment appropriate for the diverse reentry population, such as family-based, veterans, and juvenile treatment, employment assistance, housing, and support for victims, we can reduce recidivism, expand alternatives to incarceration, and reduce the harm caused by drug use in America."
