Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin Backs American Jobs Act

Gov. Peter Shumlin today issued the following statement on President Obama’s American Jobs Act:

“I commend President Obama for his bold proposal to get Americans back to work and put the country on the road to recovery. This is the number one issue on the minds of all Americans, and I am pleased that the President’s plan will translate directly into more jobs for Vermonters. The American Jobs Act will give Vermont families and small businesses the economic relief they desperately need while putting more Vermonters back to work, including teachers, veterans, construction workers and first responders.

“Vermonters need bold and decisive action from their leaders now more than ever, and I urge Congress to put aside partisan bickering and come together for the good of the nation to pass this jobs bill and get Americans back to work.”

Statement From The Dow Chemical Company With Reference to President’s September 8 Address to Congress

MIDLAND, MICHIGAN – September 9, 2011 – Andrew N. Liveris, Dow's chairman and CEO, stated today, with reference to President Obama’s September 8 address to a joint session of Congress:

I applaud President Obama for giving the economy and jobs the attention it so clearly demands, and more specifically I am pleased he is highlighting the importance of trade and infrastructure.  The President is right to focus on opening access to foreign markets and supporting Congressional adoption of the pending free trade agreements, as well an ongoing and robust investment in rebuilding of the nation’s infrastructure.  Both elements are essential to creating quality jobs here in the U.S., and are fundamental to the national effort to reinvigorate the manufacturing sector and advanced manufacturing in particular.  These actions can stimulate jobs in the near term and are critical to the nation’s long-term competitiveness.

The President’s proposals deserve a rich debate, and we urge Congress to rapidly consider and adopt those aspects that will have the most immediate impact to boost the economy and grow American jobs.

Kerry: President Obama Includes Kerry-Hutchison Bi-Partisan Infrastructure Bank Plan in Jobs Proposal

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) released the following statement after President Obama’s speech tonight to a joint session of Congress:

“This morning, 12 of us charged with putting America's fiscal house in order stressed, one after another, that we were deadly earnest about taking nothing off the table and finding the best ideas, left or right, for the strength and success of our country.  Governing in difficult times demands nothing less.

“Tonight I was very encouraged to see President Obama include the Kerry-Hutchison infrastructure bank proposal in his jobs package, and I hope everyone looks at this idea on the merits alone, not as President Obama’s idea or my idea or a bill I wrote with Kay Bailey Hutchison and Lindsey Graham. This single idea is bigger than all of us. This is America’s bill.

“An infrastructure bank is a novel and innovative approach that will create good jobs, help businesses, and make us competitive.  There’s almost $200 billion in private capital sitting on the sidelines that could be invested in our infrastructure, but it will take this bank to unlock private investment for bridges, roads, and rail. It will do more with less federal spending.  It’s the single cheapest part of the President’s jobs proposal.  It will create millions of jobs in the next decade.  It’s apolitical.  Instead of funding piecemeal projects based on political influence, the bank will operate outside of politics.  We have got to build consensus for the infrastructure bank to become law in this Congress.

“Overall, tonight I thought President Obama laid out an aggressive, pragmatic jobs and growth plan. We know we can’t fix the budget without fixing jobs and we can’t fix jobs without fixing the budget.  Everyone and I mean everyone needs to cut the rhetoric and the soundbites and the political posturing and quietly roll up our sleeves and get to work.  Our joint committee has a big job to do and so does the entire Congress and the White House.  Let’s get at it.”

AFSCME Backs American Jobs Act

PRESIDENT OBAMA IS RIGHT: WE NEED JOBS RIGHT NOW

Washington, D.C. ─ Gerald W. McEntee, President of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO (AFSCME) issued the following statement this evening in response to the American Jobs Act outlined by President Obama.

“Americans are hurting and the President knows it’s time to put the middle class and the country first, stated AFSCME Pres. Gerald W. McEntee.  "The President gets it, the suffering our members see on the frontlines of public service is real, and if the partisan response is the same old posturing about regulations, deficits and taxes, we’ll know they don’t.

“President Obama has taken a bold step toward creating jobs immediately, improving the economy, investing in infrastructure and putting America back to work. Rather than fold their arms and stomp their feet in opposition, it’s time for Republican leaders in Congress to put tea-based politics aside and do what’s right for the country.

“The President made fighting for jobs, the middle class and working families his number one priority tonight.  He realizes that economic recovery is dependent upon both public and private sector growth and closing the Texas-sized tax loopholes to make Wall Street fat-cats pay their fair share is better than laying off nurses, teachers and firefighters.

“For the first time in 60 years, we saw zero job growth last month because tiny gains in the private sector were canceled out by 17,000 job losses in the public sector. Congressional Republicans need to put aside political differences and begin the real work of the nation; but if they want a fight, bring it on. It’s worth fighting to end unemployment lines and putting people back to work.  The American Jobs Act will have an immediate impact on job creation and will help grow the economy now. Now is the time to stop the petty posturing and pandering to extremists and work with the President to pursue a jobs agenda for all Americans.”

Governor Quinn Statement on President’s Announcement of the American Jobs Act

CHICAGO – September 8, 2011. Governor Pat Quinn today issued a statement following President Obama’s announcement of the American Jobs Act:

“Tonight, the President laid out a plan that will put Americans back to work now. We in Illinois applaud President Obama’s vision for American innovation, infrastructure, fiscal responsibility and bipartisanship. As our country recovers from the worst recession in decades, we must invest in our small businesses and the sectors that are creating the jobs of today and tomorrow. I support the President’s plan, and I stand with him in calling on Congress to put aside partisan politics and do their part for America’s working families.”

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement Thursday night following President Obama’s joint address to Congress on jobs:

“This was a powerful message on jobs, aimed not at the lawmakers in the room, but at the American people. The President’s plan is just what our economy needs, and it will move the country to appeal to its elected representatives to take action on jobs and get the economy moving again.”

Harkin: Let’s Put America Back to Work and Rebuild the Middle Class

President’s Jobs Proposal Includes Harkin-led Efforts to Fund Education Jobs/School Construction

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) tonight issued the following statement after President Obama addressed Congress on the need to put America back to work.  Harkin is Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee and the Appropriations subcommittee that funds education and labor initiatives.  He has fought to prevent massive layoffs of American teachers and is leading the effort in Congress to rebuild the middle class in America.

“Traveling in Iowa this summer it was abundantly clear that the number one issue impacting Americans is not the budget deficit, but a far more urgent deficit: the jobs deficit.  By all means, we need to agree on necessary spending cuts and tax increases to bring deficits under control in the longer term.  But in the short term, we need a robust federal agenda to boost the economy and create jobs.

“I am encouraged that the President’s proposal goes to the heart of that effort by investing in the jobs that sustain a strong middle class.  In particular, new funding he proposed for educator jobs will keep teachers in the classrooms.  This echoes a bill that I pushed through Congress last year to provide $10 billion to keep teachers on the job in the face of deep cuts to state budgets.

“The President’s call to renovate our schools is a win-win for our economy and for our children.  Kids cannot be expected to reach their full potential if the school they attend is crumbling around them.  And my experience in Iowa in providing funding to renovate our schools shows that every dollar in federal funds that is provided for school construction leverages an additional four dollars in funding from other sources, creating jobs and economic growth.

“And I was pleased to see he proposed ramping up federal investments in infrastructure to boost U.S. competitiveness and create construction jobs.  As the American Society of Civil Engineers estimates, America faces a $2.2 trillion infrastructure backlog and they are correct to say that “we are still driving on Eisenhower’s roads and sending our kids to Roosevelt’s schools.”  His proposal also offers assistance so that the long-term unemployed can support their families while they continue to look for work.

“As we move forward, we must also address the fact that two-thirds of adults with disabilities are not working. In the HELP Committee, I intend to continue to hold hearings on the best way to address this issue.

“Now that this proposal has been unveiled, I encourage the President to use the bully pulpit and fight to get it passed.  Where necessary, draw a sharp contrast to those who offer only obstruction and do-nothingism.  It’s time to break up the gridlock in Washington and put America back to work.  The future of our middle class – and our economy – depends on it.”

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Backs American Jobs Act

MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA ISSUES STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT OBAMA’S AMERICAN JOBS ACT

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa issued the following statement today regarding President Obama’s American Jobs Act:

“Tonight President Obama delivered a strong and clear message to Congress: The silly season in Washington is over and it's time to get to work creating jobs for the American people.

The President's plan is practical enough to pass Congress with the inclusion of bipartisan policy proposals. It is also bold enough to have the impact our country needs to build our way out of this historic economic challenge.

The President outlined several initiatives and I support them all. But there is one that could create up to 166,000 transportation jobs in LA right away.

I thank the President for calling for a $50 billion investment in transportation job creation. The President's plan includes an expansion of TIFIA, a program within the Department of Transportation to help finance locally funded projects, that will help cities across the country put people to work building new rail lines, bridges, airports, and highways.

My national transportation investment plan, America Fast Forward, includes a similar expansion of TIFIA. More than 120 Democratic and Republican mayors support America Fast Forward. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and AFL-CIO support America Fast Forward. House Chairman Mica included an expansion of TIFIA in his transportation proposal. U.S. Senator Boxer and U.S. Senator Inhofe included an expansion of TIFIA, called America Fast Forward, in their bi-partisan transportation bill. Congress should extend the transportation bill immediately to protect jobs. Congress should then pass an expansion of TIFIA to put more than 1 million Americans to work across the country.

This Monday, I will break ground on a rail project that will create more than 10,000 jobs. This year, with the support of Congress and the expansion of TIFIA, we could move swiftly to break ground on several other projects that would put 166,000 people to work in LA.

Representative John Lewis Backs American Jobs Act

Rep. John Lewis on President Obama’s Jobs Speech

Rep. John Lewis made these comments in response to President Obama’s speech tonight during a joint session of the U.S. Congress on jobs:

“I think President Obama delivered a great speech tonight.  He reached the soul of America and acknowledged the pain and struggles so many of us are facing.  He let the American people know he has heard their cries for help.  Tonight he offered credible, legislative action that Congress can implement to help resolve our problems. His speech was bold, thoughtful, and inspiring.

“I know many will say the proposal is too expensive, but he said it can all be paid for if we are willing to insure that everyone pays their fair share and take steps to reform government where change is needed. Our problems are massive, and they will take massive intervention to resolve.  We cannot do it on the cheap, and we cannot shrink in fear, as Chairman Bernanke warned against today.  Cutting is not the only solution.  We must take action, and the President offered us a plan of action tonight.

“It was also important that the President reminded us not to use economic turmoil ‘as an excuse to wipe out basic protections’ that have defined the American way of life for decades.  We must rise to the occasion, challenge ourselves as a nation and challenge this Congress to make the hard choices and the critical compromises that create the climate and environment for growth.  We must put partisanship aside and do what is right for the American people.

“I was gratified to hear that the President will go on the road and reach out to every corner of America to enlist the support of the American people in this debate.  The President cannot do it alone. He has the power to build the kind of consensus that can re-energize, reform, and rebuild our economy.  But he needs the support of Congress, of the American people, and the business community to make a difference.  And we should give him that support.”

NEA Backs American Jobs Act

President's jobs plan to repair schools and keep educators in classrooms Initiative will keep students learning, educators working

WASHINGTON- In tonight's speech to a Joint Session of Congress, President Obama unveiled his American Jobs Act and further underscored his belief that investing in the American middle class is the surest path to economic recovery.

"President Obama clearly understands that quality education is the key to our nation's future. He's putting America's unemployed construction workers back on the job to help modernize our aging K-12 schools and community colleges," said NEA President Dennis Van Roekel. "We are pleased and encouraged that the President continues demonstrate his commitment to the success of all students by helping to make sure they have  the best possible learning environment-a key element of quality education."

"Obama's plan to create jobs acknowledges a backlog of repairs in our nation's 100,000 public schools. As budget funds continue to dwindle, many school districts have been forced to put maintenance on the back burner. In many schools, students are subject to buildings that have poor air quality, unsafe drinking water and inadequate safety systems, including fire alarms and sprinklers."

"We've heard from our members across the country as they have been returning to school. They are seeing overcrowded classes, and teachers are concerned about how they can provide every student with a well-rounded education when so many programs have been cut," said Van Roekel. "President Obama is addressing that by including $30 billion in local jobs assistance, which will put educators back where they belong - in their classrooms preparing their students to succeed."

"Unemployment isn't just an economic issue - it's an education issue," said Van Roekel. "Our members have seen firsthand the devastating impact unemployment is having on our communities and our schools. Too many of our students are coming to schools hungry and without the basic supplies they need as moms and dads struggle to make ends meet."

"Tonight, President Obama delivered a simple and powerful message to Congress and to the American people - it's time to put partisan bickering aside and get our country back to work.  There is nothing more urgent for Congress to act on than this plan to create jobs and boost our economy and create opportunity for the nation's children.  Our members are behind this initiative and will raise their voices in support to Congress, who will hopefully put politics aside and make passing this its priority," said Van Roekel.
