Readout of Vice President Biden’s Meeting with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of Greece

The Vice President met with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Ts‎ipras on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Vice President welcomed the Prime Minister's participation in President Obama's Refugee Summit and reiterated his appreciation for the critically-important efforts of the Greek government to address the needs of migrants and refugees. The Vice President expressed support for Greece's continuing implementation of its economic program in cooperation with its international partners, welcoming the difficult steps taken to date and encouraging  sustained progress on Greece's economic reforms.  The Vice President again underscored the importance of Europe following through on its commitment to put Greece's debt on a sustainable path through meaningful debt relief. The leaders also welcomed the progress made in the Cyprus negotiations and the Cypriot leaders' commitment, as expressed in their September 14 joint press statement, to continuing and intensifying their efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement agreement in 2016.
