Readout of the President's Call with Prime Minister-Designate Kan of Japan

President Obama called Democratic Party of Japan President Naoto Kan on Saturday to congratulate him on his election as Japan’s next Prime Minister. The two leaders agreed to work very closely together to address the many issues facing both nations and the global community, including the challenges posed by North Korea and Iran. They emphasized the importance they each place on the US-Japan Alliance. They shared the conviction that the partnership and close ties between the United States and Japan greatly benefit the citizens of both nations and contribute significantly to stability and prosperity throughout the world. Both leaders said that they look forward to meeting each other at the upcoming G-8 and G-20 Summits in Canada.
