Champions of Change
Kristine Woleck, 2009 U.S. Department of Education Classroom Fellow, New Cannan School. Kristine works as a staff developer/coach, a K-5 mathematics specialist/coach and a curriculum coordinator in the New Canaan Public Schools, a suburban town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, approximately 50 miles from New York City. Job-embedded professional development in the form of coaching has been the primary vehicle for moving curriculum and instruction forward in New Canaan. Kristine has immersed herself in this professional development work over the past nine years, and has been a facilitator of online coaching seminars and has authored a manuscript that describes principles and skills of coaching which was published by Corwin Press in 2010. In addition to coaching, Kristine has been a major leader in her district’s effort to develop a teacher evaluation system and contract that would fairly take include student achievement in to account as one of multiple measures having learned from the initiatives of New Haven in this area. Kristine has also focused on the development of Response to Intervention models in mathematics, not only to support struggling students but also to promote the continued growth of high-performing students in a differentiated classroom.
