National Energy Awareness Month

October is National Energy Awareness Month, a national effort to underscore how central energy is to our national prosperity, security, and environmental well-being. In commemoration of National Energy Awareness Month, the Obama Administration is kicking off a month of clean energy events and activities. Senior administration officials across the federal government will be highlighting the work they are doing to position our country for a sustainable future, create new clean energy jobs and lay the foundation for our long-term economic security.

At the meeting, the United States will work with partner nations to encourage global action to reduce methane emission sources and identify possible additional resources to achieve this goal. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in warming the atmosphere.

Secretary Chu taped a short video to be played at a ground-breaking ceremony for a new Thorlabs facility in Newton, NJ. The project will create 250 temporary construction jobs, will retain 300 permanent jobs in the Newton area, and will ultimately create 150 jobs in Newton.

In an historic step forward in the nation’s clean energy future, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today approved the first large-scale solar energy plants ever to be built on public lands. The two projects, both located in California, are the first in a series of renewable energy projects on public lands under final review by the Department of the Interior that would provide thousands of U.S. jobs and advance U.S. clean energy technologies.
