Letters to President Obama

From

Marjorie Foster, Glendale, California

June 26, 2014

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you, Mr. President, for establising the Affordable Care Act(ACA). I know many people complain about the ACA and do not understand why it is needed. But what people do not understand is that not everyone can afford to get health insurance coverage, even if they if they are gainfully employeed. I am the face of the ACA. A little about me, I am a nationally certified sign language interpreter working on my Master's Degree in Linguistics. I am recently divorced and was covered under my ex-wife's plan. As an independant contractor and hourly employee for numerous companies, universities and colleges health insurance was not offered to me and because I have minor pre-existing conditions I have been precluded from affordable, viable health care, until now. Last October, when I thought my insurance was going lapse, I tried to shop for insurance and had to face the cruel reality that that was not going to happen.I was quoted $800 a month for Major Medical and then was promptly denied, due to my pre-existing conditions. When I signed up this month through Covered California however, the process was virtually painless and now I have insurance that I can afford (i.e. PPO for just over $300). I wanted to thank you for making this happen. I know you do not receive many accolades as of late but, I wanted to take the time to send you a message that I am grateful for what you have done for me and many uninsured/underinsured Americans. I do not know if this will actually reach your desk, but I hope your staff will let you know that the ACA was a good decision. Thank you. Sincerely, Marjorie Foster
