Letters to President Obama

From

Angela Spear, Meridian, Idaho

May 27, 2009

President Obama,

I just wanted to drop a quick note to let you know that our family is a very conservative and generally republican one. Although on occasion my husband informs me that I sound just like you.

Even though we have some very striking differences of opinion on some issues, I have worked very hard to teach my children to be respectful of those who serve them, especially those who have authority over them. So you can imagine my dismay when my first grader came home from school very upset that an evil man was elected to be our president. We sat down and had a long talk about how you may have different beliefs than we do, but that you were a good man, working very hard to do what you believe to be the best for our country.

Somehow she has grown to love you and is even writing you letters and drawing you pictures. It makes me feel a bit jealous, but I am proud of the respect she is showing to you, despite some of the things she hears from her conservative friends at school. I think she is even convincing some of them as to how great you truly are.

I realize you probably won't get this letter or see her picture, but for her sake we had to mail it. If by some chance you do get it we just want to let you know how much we appreciate the work you are doing for our country.

Sincerely,

Angela Spear

The President's Response

Angela and Kathleen —

Thanks for the wonderful drawing. Kathleen, I am keeping it in my desk in the Oval Office. And Angela — I appreciate your wise parenting.

God Bless both of you.
