Readout of Vice President Biden’s Meeting with Italian Senate President Pietro Grasso

Vice President Biden met this morning with the Senator Pietro Grasso, President of the Italian Senate.  The two leaders discussed their shared commitments to countering terrorism and organized crime, strengthening regional security from North Africa to Afghanistan, and creating new jobs and economic growth on both side of the Atlantic, including through the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.  The Vice President affirmed that the U.S. partnership with Italy is one of the strongest links between the United States and Europe and praised Senator Grasso for his vision in helping prioritize and advance those legislative reforms that would put Italy on a path of growth and stability.  The Vice President and Senator Grasso also discussed recent reports of alleged U.S. intelligence activities.  The Vice President made clear that the Administration is reviewing the way that we gather intelligence to ensure that we properly balance protecting the security concerns of our citizens and allies with the privacy concerns that all people share.

Readout of Vice President Biden’s Meeting with Minister of Strategic Affairs and International Relations Yuval Steinitz of Israel

Israel’s Minister of Strategic Affairs and International Relations, Dr. Yuval Steinitz, discussed a range of bilateral and regional issues with the Vice President in his office today.  They reiterated their mutual commitment to a strong, unshakable partnership between the United States and Israel.

Readout of Vice President Biden’s Breakfast with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif

Vice President Biden hosted breakfast this morning for Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.  The Vice President congratulated the Prime Minister on his historic election in May, which led to the first democratic transfer of power between elected governments in Pakistan's history.  The Vice President reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to strengthening bilateral ties in support of a strong, democratic, prosperous Pakistan.  The Vice President affirmed to the Prime Minister that together we must continue to combat terrorism and violent extremism and work to strengthen regional and global security.  The Vice President and Prime Minister also discussed many of the economic and development challenges that Pakistan faces and the steps the Prime Minister is taking to address them.

Readout of Vice President Biden’s Meeting with Finance Minister Yair Lapid of Israel

Vice President Biden met today at the White House with Finance Minister Yair Lapid of Israel who is visiting Washington, D.C. for the Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund.   They were joined by Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew and White House Middle East Coordinator Phil Gordon.   In a wide ranging conversation, the Vice President and Minister Lapid discussed Israel’s economy as well as regional issues, including recent developments with regard to Iran, Israel’s negotiations with the Palestinians, and the importance of strengthened economic cooperation between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

This week, the House of Representatives shut down the government, the President continued to urge them to pass a resolution to open the government back up, and the Health Insurance Marketplace opened for business under the Affordable Care Act. That's September 27th to October 3rd, or "Just vote, and end this shutdown."
