The Schedule

In the morning, the President will visit the Ford Motor Company Chicago Assembly Plant and continue to tell the story of how the tough choices he made to save the American auto industry were necessary to save a million American jobs, stave off economic devastation in our auto communities and revitalize an entire American industry.  Later this year, the Chicago Assembly Plant will begin production of the new, fuel efficient 2011 Ford Explorer.  Ford just announced that thanks in part to new Department of Energy loan guarantees aimed at helping companies retool their plants to make more fuel efficient vehicles, the Chicago plant is adding 1,200 new jobs. There will be travel pool coverage of the tour, and the President’s remarks are open press.

In the afternoon, the President will deliver remarks on behalf of Senate Candidate Alexi Giannoulias at the Palmer House Hilton. Later, the President will deliver remarks at a DNC finance event at the Chicago Cultural Center. There will be travel pool coverage of the President’s remarks.

Later in the morning, President Obama will deliver remarks to the AFL-CIO Executive Council Meeting at the Washington Convention Center. The President’s remarks are pooled press.  The President will discuss the steps we have taken to rebuild the economy and create jobs, and the fact that while we have a long way to go, we are headed in the right direction.  The President will continue to lay out the choice we face on the economy today: whether to move forward on new ways to create jobs and strengthen our recovery, or go back to the failed policies of the past that led to a decade of economic insecurity for the middle class, culminating in a recession that has cost 8 million jobs.

In the afternoon, the President will deliver remarks and present the 2010 Citizens Medal to 13 winners from across the country at an event in the East Room. For 40 years, the Presidential Citizens Medal has recognized Americans who have “performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens.” This Medal is among the highest honors a President can bestow, and it stands as a token of gratitude to those who represent what is best about this Nation. In the morning, the President will travel to Michigan to tour and speak to workers at a Chrysler Auto Plant in Detroit and a General Motors Auto Plant in Hamtramck. Just over a year after President Obama made tough decisions to save Chrysler and GM, these companies are returning to profitability, hiring workers, and keeping plants open. And because of the steps the Administration and Congress have taken with Cash for Clunkers and the Recovery Act, the industry overall is strengthening. The Hamtramck GM plant is one of nine that GM recently kept open during a scheduled summer shutdown in production. The Jefferson North Chrysler plant just added a second shift bringing approximately 1,100 jobs to the plant.

In the morning, the President will deliver a major education reform speech at the National Urban League 100th Anniversary Convention at the Washington Convention Center. The President will discuss how his signature Race to the Top program and other initiatives are driving education reform across the country and focusing the nation on the goal of preparing students for college and careers.   He will highlight the unprecedented support for and adoption of common standards by a majority of states already, and the Administration’s commitment to develop the next generation of high-quality assessments benchmarked to common standards.  The President’s speech will focus on the dramatic reforms that states, school districts, schools and teachers unions have undertaken over the past 18 months, including steps to improve teacher effectiveness and transform persistently low-performing schools. The Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden will travel to Fort Drum, New York, to welcome home the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, from Iraq. One of the most deployed brigades in the U.S. Army, the 2nd Brigade Combat Team has participated in three deployments to Afghanistan and four deployments to Iraq. The 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division is redeploying from eastern Baghdad, Iraq, after deploying in October 2009 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During this deployment, the soldiers of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team successfully completed their mission and contributed to the overall success of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The homecoming at Fort Drum is one of many this summer, as the United States ends its combat mission in Iraq on August 31st and draws down to 50,000 troops from approximately 145,000 troops when the Obama-Biden administration took office. The remaining troops will advise and assist Iraq’s security forces. In accordance with an agreement between the U.S. and Iraqi governments, all U.S. forces will leave Iraq by December 31, 2011.

As part of Recovery Summer, Vice President Biden will visit Yellowstone and Grand Canyon National Parks, where $25 million in Recovery Act funding is creating jobs and jump-starting previously-deferred construction and maintenance projects. More than 1,000 workers have already been part of the seventeen Recovery Act projects at Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. Overall, there are 800 Recovery Act projects underway at National Parks across the country this summer – eight times as many as there were last summer.
