New Center for Excellence Fuels Prize to Help Modernize Tools for Patent Examination
Posted by on December 16, 2011 at 6:12 PM EDTToday the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in cooperation with the newly unveiled Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation (COECI) launched the USPTO Innovation Challenge, a $50,000 prize to develop new algorithms to aid in patent examination.
Approximately half-a-million U.S. patents are filed by inventors, entrepreneurs, and businesses each year. The Challenge is part of a broader USPTO endeavor to modernize the information technology used by the Office’s patent examiners.

Posted by on December 16, 2011 at 5:36 PM EDTYesterday, the President took a big step forward toward protecting Americans’ privacy and civil liberties with the nomination of three highly respected individuals to serve on the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB). The PCLOB is a new independent board established by Congress to advise and oversee executive branch activities with civil liberties implications, including intelligence and law enforcement practices, and to assist the President and Federal agencies in making sure that the implementation of laws, regulations, and policies related to counterterrorism appropriately consider citizens’ privacy and civil liberties.

Posted by on December 16, 2011 at 2:34 PM EDTLast week, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers released a study examining the future of the U.S. electric grid. MIT concluded that developing a modern grid through the anticipation of needed improvements can facilitate the integration of renewable energy resources, accommodate a growing number of electric vehicles, improve resiliency, and enhance efficiency.
The President and his Administration agree on the importance of a modernized grid – and in June the National Science and Technology Council released A Policy Framework for the 21st Century Grid. The Policy Framework provides a roadmap to ensure that all Americans benefit from investments in the Nation’s electric infrastructure, and it features four policy pillars:

Knight Foundation announced the winners of the Apps for Communities Challenge, which challenged software developers to create open source apps that make local public information more personalized, usable, and actionable for all Americans. The Apps for Communities Challenge exemplifies the potential of prizes to bring America’s ingenuity to bear on pressing national challenges, as called for by President Obama in his Strategy for American Innovation.
AMPing Up Manufacturing in America
Posted by on December 13, 2011 at 10:24 AM EDTYesterday, President Obama strengthened his commitment to revitalizing manufacturing in the United States by naming Commerce Secretary John Bryson co-chair of the White House Office of Manufacturing Policy with National Economic Council Chair Gene Sperling.
Manufacturing, specifically “Making it in America,” is a cornerstone of a robust economy and sustained economic growth. That’s why the President appointed high-ranking Federal officials like John Bryson and Gene Sperling to lead his Office of Manufacturing Policy, and it’s why he launched the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP) this past June in Pittsburgh.
